Where will this lead......
Have made a start on this...........
Folding has been a challenge but all the long lengths are now folded and soldered.
Wondering where this will lead, a layout or diorama.........

Hmm. Looks like something that should have a crane perched on top of it...

Calling your original image 'headstock01.jpg' gave us a bit of a clue, Rob
Doesn't look like a local Notts pit - where is it?

Richard, it is based on Cefn Coed/Blaenant colliery in south Wales. The etches are by Malcolm Wright at http://www.wrightscale.co.uk although not listed on his website. Apparently he only produces 'x' amount of etches per year (4mm and 2mm) and needs to be contacted for availability.
I fell lucky as he had a badly tarnished etch of the sheaves (also sold as a separate etch) which he threw in to my order for free, so that will sort the up shaft. Quite a complex set of etches on 3 x A4 brass sheets, instructions OK'ish but would have liked some drawings (photocopy photos which are just black.....) but there are examples on the web from which you can get further information.
As mentioned, bending was initially a problem, the half etch fold lines were competing with the half etch diagonal struts. I opted for an initial fold between 2 steel rules.... it was then to the machine vice and gradually folding a bit at a time.

Ps.....glad the legs are now working!!

Almost as awkward as lattice signal posts by the sound of it. Looks like a job well done!

Those legs will be coming to footpaths near you anytime soon! I am walking up to around 30 miles again already - just a shame the nights are drawing in!

Looks like the type of thing I'll need if I go ahead with my mine proposal.
Looking forward to whatever you come up with.

Just when I was thinking I had an excuse NOT to model the actual pithead in my emerging plan to show my version of what happened to the Clandown branch when Middle Pit, Radstock, was altered early in the twentieth century....
Nice one, Rob; will be following with considerable interest.

Thought my original idea that it was a North Sea oil rig offered more possibilities - think of all the weather problems they would have avoided if resupply had been by submarine railway ...

Very novel David.......would need the submarine railway to be invented.....no doubt more up the street of our inventive Armchair Modeller (no disrespect Richard.... )

Hyperloops?????....way above my understanding.......old enough to be still of the steam driven era which I fully understand as an ex model engineer and live working steam traction engines under my belt, and there I will stay.......

If anyone is looking for a good book on collieries and needs inspiration/pictures etc for everything above and below ground, then this book by the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales is probably one of the best out there.

Thanks for that Philip, loads of good photos and drawings, some poor drawings but for £2.48 worth it.

My family were Powell Duffryn employees in the Rhymney valley and so the concentration of information in the book on those collieries text, diagrams and photos, it has a lot of resonance.

Re: Where will this lead......
In the meantime, work has progressed, the 'tower' is almost complete. A few strengthening overlays and the cross bracing needed. Needed a change and the last couple of days has been spent on soldering up one of the sheaves.......they come in 6 parts and are a very good representation of the real thing with the spokes offset and at an angle with a groove for the cable (reminds me of my model engineering days when building traction engine wheels with their offset spokes). For the first attempt not entirely satisfied, the wheel wobble is 20x that of a supplier who's products have been mentioned here before. It is acceptable as a static model however I do have spares. Methinks that I need to formulate a jig to keep all flat....hopefully! Very overcast at the moment but photos will follow when lighting permits....but I'm enjoying the process in between re-decorating the house.......

Yup, relative hard work, but having COPD I have an excuse for not doing too much so that leaves me with the afternoons to do my own thing sitting at my workbench.......
