Not true at all unfortunately, in a big firebox, the blow from a dropped plug was all too easy to miss and on 10 September 1940, a Duchess lost the crown sheet after running many miles with the plugs down. This was not the crew's fault - the gauge frame had been incorrectly assembled and it was not a unique incident. In that case, a catastrophic explosion was only avoided because of just how little water there was in the boiler.

Recognising this, the Canadian Locomotive Co built boilers with alternate rows of crownstays without nuts - thus, overheating would cause a single row of stays to fail but not the whole sheet - an event which would disable the loco, but which would always prevent a serious disaster. It was just such a boiler failure which occurred on the Gettysburg Tourist Railroad in 1995, seriously injuring the crew, but saving a total disaster.
