With the 24s out of the way for now, attention has returned to the iron ore wagons, three of which got painted last night:

Starting a new project and I've resolved to complete it before I move on to anything else...

And here it is, Bachmann's Class 46 which is going to become 46026:

Image

I fitted a set of Ultrascale wheels a good while ago but it never ran satisfactorily as the pony truck kept derailing on turnouts mainly due to a lack of weight so, to overcome that, I have the Penbits sprung bogie kit:

Additional details courtesy of Shawplan:

It's also going to require a fair number of modifications to the body (body side steps need plating over for starters) and the roof details are different as well.

The real loco on the day I'm modelling it (photo by Stephen McGahon):

And other photos of it from pretty much every angle on my website here http://southpelawjunction.co.uk/wp/?page_id=1787 so not too many excuses for getting the details wrong...

One of the diesels (a Class 24 or similar) we have running on Calderside and Kettlewell is Penbits equipped and is the best runner, I think for the same reason, that there is weight on all the wheels, whatever the track might do. I seem to recall the leading wheel problem on 1CoCo1 diesels even in 00 gauge. Have fun John, I think our John found his a very satisfying project.

A Penbits chassis shows what you get with a well designed and thought through sprung chassis design. One has to approve.

Some progress on the workbench for a change...

What will become 31319 has had a coat of primer which has highlighted that the body stripe needs to thinned down quite a bit and that the damage at the bottom of the noses (the body is from a loco that suffered from chassis rot) needs to be sorted out. Finish is a bit dusty as well but will be rubbed down before the next coat of paint...

The Class 31 is looking good Jon. Rather you than me thinning down the body stripe!

Maybe some kind of specialised scraper using the raised moulding as a guide could be used.

All the best,

Colin

Cheers Colin, plan is to mask either side of it then take some square section brass or plastic and glue some wet and dry to the end which should allow me to control what gets sanded but we'll see...

Work has started on the Penbits bogies for the 46. As usual, Ian's instructions are a perfect example of how instructions should be done with every step both described and photographed and everything fits as it should with the absolute minimum of fettling.

Bearings and their carriers:

Total progress so far, two subframes ready for clean up, components for the pony trucks and four springs:

Work continues on the bogies, this time with the start of the bolsters.

The two parts at the top start off as a single etch and 12 folds and a bit of solder later look like what you see in the photo:

The bolsters are complete and next step is modifications to the Bachmann chassis:

Ian Penberth has, quite rightly, pointed out that the left hand set of 'legs' on the top bolster in the photo are the wrong way round, thank good ness for soldered construction which will make correction possible.

Work continues on the 46 with the bolsters and their pivots test fitted to the Bachmann bogie frames (the bottom of the frames needs to be removed still) and, test fitted under the chassis...

Hello John,

The work on the Class 46 is looking good. The gap between the bogie side frames to the bodywork looks as if it going to be prototypically close.

The one aspect on this design of locomotive in model form is that the gap between the buffer beam and cab front always seems too large. Maybe the model is designed that way for clearance on less than level trackwork.

All the best,

Colin
