Hi John,

I don't normally do "me too" posts...

However the weathering on those three hoppers is absolutely exquisite. They look so well-observed. Not just the colours, but the textures are superb.

Really inspiring modelling. More please!

Cheers

Thank you, much appreciated.

The texture is one of the reasons I use the pastels for the underframe weathering, it gives you something that you just don't get with paint alone...

I now have a full 8 wagon train of 21 tonners, 5 Hornby, 1 modified Dapol and 2 Parkside (the HTV still needs buffers and vacuum pipes) but the train is otherwise complete and ready for the layout:

Some 16 tonners have joined the fleet having had their weathering completed:

None of these are ever going to be award winners but, as I've said before, with the number of wagons that the South Pelaw layout will take and me being a one man band, I have to be pragmatic and compromise...

"I have to be pragmatic and compromise...."

I can't detect much compromising John. Terrific stuff.

Hi John,

Lovely stuff, especially the 21t hoppers. Some of the best weathering I've seen. Keep it up and keep it coming. Looking forward to more.

John.

As I alluded to in my Pelton Level thread, as I've now decided to concentrate on the South Pelaw layout, I've made a start on building a batch of Dave Alexander's iron ore wagons.

Image

The two on the right were built some time ago and do contain a couple of mistakes (entirely of my own making by not reading the instructions properly) so they may be replaced eventually.

That they are. They are very heavy but very free running which is just as well as nine are required for a full train.

The wagons are looking good John! At the risk of basing my comment on a model (the EM South Pelaw layout), does your layout's chosen location not include a challenging incline somewhere, requiring a banking engine?! (Not sure if those hoppers ran on that line.)

Thinking a little outside the box perhaps, but for mainline trains, you could motorise a wagon one wagon.

Watching with interest,

Colin

Hi Colin,

Yes, there is an incline albeit, for stage one of the model at least, the incline begins off stage. In later steam days, the trains were hauled by a 9F and, at South Pelaw, a banker (typically a WD, 9F or, towards the end a Class 40 diesel) would be taken on. From November 1967 double headed Class 24s took over with no banker and that is the period I'll be modelling.

That is going to be an impressive train Jon!

It must be good to have a completed example for inspiration.

As a break from construction, I thought I'd have a go at weathering one of the painted iron ore wagons. Below is a photo (copyright Howie Milburn) of the real thing:

and below is my attempt at the same thing in model form. Weathering is done with 3 different colours of pastel chalk.

Convincing weathering Jon!

Do you have transfers for these vehicles?

I do, Cambridge Custom Transfers do them but, as you can see from the photo of the real thing, there wasn't much evidence of the markings in the later years. I'm planning on doing one or two to look like they may have just come out of the works so they will be a lot cleaner and the markings will show.

Excellent stuff John....must tell us how you did the weathering, or at least what you used!

Railtec also do the transfers for these.

Thanks for the comments gents.

Pete, weathering was done with three chalk pastels as shown below:

Image

I've no idea what the two browns are called but they are just rubbed on to sandpaper to form the dust and then brushed on to the model.

Takes about five minutes to do one side of the wagon so, for me at least, much quicker than using an airbrush. Only problem is that the result is very fragile so will need a clear coat to fix it.

Hi John,

Don't undersell yourself, that's a very good weathering job indeed.
