Does anyone know of a source for dimensioned drawings of signal lamp casings, both historical and modern please?

If you find them I'd be interested. What dimensions are you after. Posts? Bases? Heads? Which eras? Which company/manufacturer? I think LMS Journal has some dimensions of the LMS ones from the 1930's. Pictorial Record of GWR Signalling (OPC) has a few drawings of 1930's Westinghouse signals. Where can you get drawings of 1950's, 1960's ER, LMR and SR stuff? The 1970 and 80's? and the recent updating of LMR lines? Not even DEMU seems to have this info. I've not seen it in UpDate. Please prove me wrong somebody.

I know this doesn't have any real details but do they think that the implication of sex can sell signals? Well, I suppose it works on brochures for new houses...

Thanks for the link, I went to the site and found a dimensioned diagram of their four aspect casings in the data sheets section.

I am mainly concerned with the 50s to mid sixties, North east and Scotland, but also interested in the wider subject. I think a digest on the detail would be a useful addition the the Scalefour reference library if it is possible.

Is that a volunteer that I see before me???

We are always happy to receive material that would make a good Digest sheet, and I'm sure that the Digests Editor could give any advice on what is needed.

If you could share your research, I'm sure that it would greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Les,
The Westinghouse info you got would be relevant certainly from the early 60s up until the recent LED signals. The Doublet lenses have been an established standard covering UK and USA from the 30s or earlier and while the precise details of housings vary a little, castings or fabricated from sheet, one piece or modular, none of these are significant for 4mm modelling. The details you can really see are the profile of the sighting board/background and the arrangement of lens hoods. These vary significantly over time and by company/region. You need to refer to photos for these.
L G Warburton did a series on LMS Signals in "LMS journal" and started on Colour Light signals in LMS Journal 19. You may find these worthwhile, I have No 19 in my book list but don't have subsequent issues.
http://www.lmsjournal.com shows further installments in issues 20, 21, 23, 25, 26 and 27 but does not give details of particular topics except the last which covers the Euston-Watford suburban lines. Best to buy any from a shop/exhibition where you can look before you buy as some will be on specialist subjects such as the Mirfield speed signalling.

:o Whilst in the spirit of good community, I willingly share...

I was hoping, having seen the apparent quality of P4 exhibition models, that it would be a furrow already ploughed by members of many more years standing than my mere couple of months in finescale.
Hopefully, one or a few of the aforesaid may post me some pointers. If this transpires, I may then have sufficient material to contribute to a digest.

At present what I mostly have is questions.
:)

Thanks Keith,
I will be at SECC Glasgow in February, I will see what I can find ; plus I can quiz the Scalefour folk that I find about their kit. I also wonder if anyone has info on LNER / 50s BR NE lighting?

You only have to look at the other topic on here to see the current state of the art in c/l signal making.
http://www.scalefour.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=32 and the end results are here:

Maybe try asking in the other topic.

No need to be tetchy Keith, I had already explored Tony Sissons' topic without finding dims of interest other than the micro LEDs. Indeed, It was this inspiration that opened the door to possibilities and prompted the question.

I elected to start a new topic because I had no wish to hijack Tony's work-in-progress thread with a diversion to an earlier period.
