A nice Metro I bought some years ago awaiting new pick ups.
Presently it picks up only off the drivers and is intermittent. I'm adding improved ones on all wheels including the trailing ones.

Re: GWR Metro
Nice loco, my understanding is the 'Metro' was the 2-4-0 wheel arrangement, but I stand to be corrected, it looks like a '517' to me in later guise, is it the old Mallard kit?

Re: GWR Metro
My mistake. My GW knowledge isn't that good. It's a 517. Metros were bigger and had a 'squarer' look.

It's definitely a Mallard kit

Re: GWR Metro edit 517
Today (Sunday) I had a late night modelling session. A square on side view of a 517 in the cab/bunker variation the kit displays (why did they make it so rare?) Showed that the cab wasn't vertical. This causes the cab top to miss the cab rear by 1mm. The cab rear was also out by about 0.5mm but too far back. I then noticed only a few parts of the kit were soldered, the rest was glued. After removing the cab, which was soldered at only two points, I could see the Belpaire firebox was 0.5mm too far back. This was a white metal casting and was prised off. The rearmost boiler band wasn't straight either. Careful filing reduced the length of the firebox at the front, which also hit the bad boiler band. It's not soldered back yet but the improved is there.

Dunk it in a jar of cellulose thinners overnight, amazing how much better (or worse) they look when the poor paint job comes off!

I'm afraid when you are building with a view to writing it up, taking pictures to illustrate the words always seem to find thing aren't as finished as they should be and you need to do something about. The hint, I suppose, is that taking photos as you go along which you look at very carefully are a great way of improving the results. Although it may well slow you down. If it looks OK in a big blow-up your definitely winning.

I didn't build it. I got it through the HMRS a few years ago at a bargain price. The pick ups didn't work and it had previously been painted; traces of green remain. I'll attend to the faults later, but now I'm actively modelling again my skills are returning. I feel I should remove the boiler/smokebox/firebox unit and have it as a separate removable part, to aid detailing and painting, but that makes it a big job and I'm still unhappy about the crude suspension it came with.

I can't agree more.
Wise words.

If you stick that jar in warm water in a Sonic bath and run for about 20 mins it will clean all that primer off. It will also break down any glue used so be prepared to have to rebuild it. It melt/dissolve any plastic bits.

I think there are only whitemetal and brass parts. Cellulose is in the shops...
I'll use that technique for a couple of metal wagons and a K's GWR auto coach though.
Hopefully see you at Wells, Jeremy. I need some BR w-irons as my 16T mineral has stalled...
