Last week Branchlines supplied a new worm and gear set. They were installed for Scalefour North, where a trail on Paul Gittings test track showed the quartering was out. Michael Edge kindly supplied missing bits from the kit, so I'm now on course to complete the brakes and a few cosmetic bits.

I was at Peak Rail Rowsley on Friday doing some work for LMS 10000 - Ivatt Diesel ReCreation Society. On a previous visit as I was leaving I spied a Yorkshire DE2, actually BSC No 2, "Rotherham", one of the prototypes. Seeing as none of the production ones survive I took the opportunity on this visit to take detailed photos.

Thanks to Mike Edge's spare etches and the clambering over the real DE2 I know know exactly what is required of the brake gear. I've 3 pairs of one brake type but only 1 single complete one of the plain hangers. Mike only had the other type. The original builder of my kit used solid brass strip between the hangers instead of wire. Why? Somehow they'd damaged the hangers, beyond repair. So, I'm fabricating 3 hangers. Oops! Broken 2 drills and it's not even filed to shape. I'm drilling the holes before fretting the hangers. Slow progress, but progress nonetheless.

Bit of work today. The compensation beam had failed so was redesigned and soldered in today. A simple rocking beam. Next the brake gear. The missing bits will use Wizard/Mainly Trains GWR hangers which I bought a few weeks ago together with the Judith Edge spares. Funny how Yorkshire used GWR style. Anything to do with the Panniers they built I wonder?

I've now found the con rods have been built with two etches on one side and single etch on the other. Needlass to say, there is more wear on the single etch.

Hopefully the final error in the original construction. There should be a piece of brass across the frame in the middle. In real life one(?) of the brake cylinders seems to be bolted to it. the rod holding the leading rear wheel brake hanger is also missing. There are now ready to be soldered in place .

Quite a session today. As noted I was unhappy with the con-rods. Running was erratic with a tight spot. Combined with the discovery that one rod was single thickness, I looked closer. The holes were far too large so I added new backs to both rods.
20210414_154955.jpg

One was a single piece of nickel silver from Paletine Models via Society Stores. This was filed down to match the existing rod.

20210414_155322.jpg

The other was the correct thickness on the rod with larger pieces for the bosses, which alone were filed down to match.
They were cut using shears.

20210414_171735.jpg

The holes were filled with solder and new accurate holes drilled.

20210414_171804.jpg

These were set up using an Avonside Chassis 2 to correct any discrepencies and matched the rods to the chassis.
I centre punched new holes, drilled and reamed to fit the crank pin bushes.

Thankfully it all worked perfectly when I refitted the wheels and rods. Now I had a sweet running chassis The middle beam in the chassis was fitted though I had to later cut and file it in order to fit the motor . The next job is to fit the brakes, the BTH crest, Yorkshire nameplate and rear brake handle casing.

Well, I owe an apology to the builder of the DE2. For the last few years, I thought that some brakes were missing. They are, but I'm the culprit. I've found an old photo of the chassis and all the brakes were there. At some point after dismantalling the chassis, I lost some brakes. Now I've made new ones, the original ones are bound to surface. However, some were damaged and could not be refitted without work. I'll make some ammendments to earlier posts, to save embarrasment.

Aaaand, I've found one. Where the other one went, I've no idea. Also shows the fixed bearing that fell out Theres also a mystery stretcher. All it says is part "F"

Looking at the photo of the frame in grey primer, I can see the box the loco is normally kept in. I can't understand why the other brake block isn't in there. I can see that the original builder put brake pull rods on. Rotherham does not have these, presumably there is a linkage underneath between the frames similar to BR wagon clasp brakes.

Why the builder put strips of metal, bent at the ends to link the brake blocks I'm not sure when there are perfectly good holes for brass rod to fit. Late last night I dropped my pin vice and snapped the drill bit. There is enough left to use but not safely store. Who sell bits No.s 61-64 and 73-77 and 79 -80 (the ones I have missing)?

Aren't the Eileen's drills just metric equivalents of the number drills and so you miss the opportunity to have the in-between sizes? Suggest you have a look at somewhere like Drill Services (Horley) who give a very quick service. It can be a job finding HSS jobber drills, however, but a real eye-opener on the way. Perhaps pick-up a nice single flute countersink while you're on!

You might buy at least a couple of each to cover future breakages as they are probably the sizes you use most. They're pretty cheap, mostly.

Have you considered getting a set of metric drills for the simple reason that you know how big they are without having to look them up each time?

A few years ago I was pointed in the direction of Arc Eurotrade (surprisingly not renamed Arc UKtrade after 31/12/20) at https://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Cutting-Tools/Twist-Drill-Bits

I've expreienced excellent quality and service from them. You, and other members, might do well to consider this as covering a range of sins...

Yes that's a wise move. I have a few spares already but not a complete set.

Personally I'm not that bothered about having a wide range of drill sizes. I find a few basic sizes of drills than a set of Five Sided Cutting Broaches (0.4mm to 1.4mm) to give me the size hole I want. Again Eileen will provide. They wont do for blind holes but I find I very rarely need such a thing.

Surely, Will, the right size drill must be quicker - if you want a 0.7 hole just drill one rather than drilling a smaller hole and enlarging it a bit at a time and checking size repeatedly. Sets of small drills aren't expensive, either, and you get a nice box to keep them in with each one labelled. Anyway, it works for you and you're not alone but I don't think it should be encouraged. Different if you can't afford the drills or want an odd size but sets are still the cheapest way to buy drills.
