Crane gears source

Postby Andy W » Wed Jan 03, 2018 5:06 pm

I'm toying with the idea of building a "simple" hand operated yard crane similar to this in Bob Essery's Midland Wagons V.2.

MR hand crane.jpg

Most components seem "doable" as a scratch build, except the gear wheel. Does anyone know of a source for such parts?

Cheers

Half way down this page http://www.modellingtimbers.co.uk/20.html there is a 48mm gear wheel, but might be too big, but on other pages they have pulleys etc.

Andy,

an internet search for "clock gears" will turn up some results, including ebay, where there are some cheap assorted packs which may contain something suitable.

Wills plastic kits do a yard crane with a couple of gears.

Ebay. Search for watch and/or clock gears/cogs. You can get packets of them for three or four pounds. Useful for all sorts of things.

Alternatively put a guard over the gears (some cranes did have them) and the absence of teeth would not be noticed.

Andy,

If the existing ideas do not come up trumps, I have drawn up a gear wheel that is very similar - it was the wheel drive on this https://highlandmiscellany.com/2013/12/ ... ard-crane/

I have had this printed and someone like Allan Butler can readily do further prints. As it is based on CAD artwork, scaling it up or down can readily be done so it can be done to any size.

Thanks again all. More useful suggestions. I like the "cheat" suggested by Terry!

Those pictures are very useful Mark. Also I love your Dia 51 brake. Could they ever have run on the Midland?

The Allan Butler/Modelu route sounds ideal if I first work out the size I need then order from him. Would I contact him direct or go via yourself?

Hi Andy,

Allan has not got this particular piece of artwork, so it would need to come from me in the first instance.

There is an early BR picture of the dia 51 full brake in Reading. It had to get down south somehow, so anything is possible!!! Prior to this time they would have been regulars on the CR and possibly GSWR systems but probably not south of the border.

Reading's south enough for me. I'll talk to you at a show about it. I'm the old, ugly guy you like to insult.
