The Chilterns Area Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month and includes members of both the Scalefour Society and EMGS.
On 20th June seven members joined John Turner at his home. They admired the progress that John had made on his layout since our last visit, in particular the lineside fencing comprising posts and 0.2mm brass wire from Model Railway Scenery, stables from Timbertracks and a fine scratchbuilt barn. In addition to detailing a rake of Hornby Colletts and a pair of auto trailers John had also been batch-building parts for signals. Two members brought locos to test, with varying results. John Hutchins had been lucky on E-bay again and showed a Malcolm Mitchell GWR 4575 with a Portescap motor, a nicely grubby Bachmann Class 25 with Ultrascale wheels and a GWR saddle tank made from a Wills kit with pick-ups that needed fettling. Alan Rhodes ran a Hornby T9 with Ultrascale wheels which were the result of a commission, a Lima Class 37 remotored with a Buehler from a Jaguar boot lock and Ultrascale gears, a TDL Class 15 with a resin body and a Mashima motor on one bogie and a Heljan Class 16 with Ultrascale wheels. Unsurprisingly, the future of Ultrascale and its wheels was one topic discussed. Others included the Thameslink debacle, ticket prices, casting lead and horse manure!
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 18th July ant the Engineer, St John's Road, Harpenden AL5 1DJ, commencing at 2 pm. It will be preceded by informal lunch at 12.45 pm for 1 pm.
