Serious scratchbuilding.

He thinks he'll have the whole thing ready for painting in 4 months! Ye gods!

I'm intrigued by the coach end in the lower picture. Is it an early railcar?

Hello Ian

It's a LBSCR 4 wheeled Brake Third number 4115. It is undergoing a pretty serious renovation and there is still much to do. I would guess that it has had a coat of aluminium primer.

You never know... This is the rebuild story of something similar on the blog of a friend of mine: http://frogspawnblog.blogspot.co.uk/

And if the Great Eastern could build a J15 in under a day...

Given your location Steve, I am guessing that this is on the Isle of White Steam Railway. A similar scene can be seen at the Bluebell who also have LBSC and other pre-grouping coaches under restoration. They also have a carriage shed of similar quality to the one in the pictures and it is possible for visitors to see work in progress.

On June 27th/28th the Bluebell's model show will take place and this uses the carriage shed for some of the displays. This show will include Barry Luck's Plumpton Green also due to be shown at The Epsom and Ewell show on April 25th/26th and at Scaleforum on September 19th/20th.

It is wonderful to see restoration work of this quality underway - but what is the wagon that is being rebuilt? Given the location it is probably something ex LBSCR

Hi Gerry

It's not a rebuild as such. Everything but the iron work is new ie all the woodwork.

I'll try to find out more next time I'm on site.

Terry - yes it is the IOW Steam Railway (Wight!)

I hope he has read the instructions, http://www.scalefour.org/forum/s4news_download.php?f=S4-135.pdf
and 3 further installments.
Keith
PS. States the job is to be done in three and a half days, not 4 months!

The key thing there which I hadn't understood - and I would guess most model builders don't attempt to emulate - is painting the wood underneath all metal fittings before attaching them. I can't actually see much evidence of that in the original picture ...?

Why is the headstock made from two half-thickness planks?

Too many questions to which I have no answers!

I have answers!

The head stocks have been treated before the ironwork has been attached. A brush of such treatment has been run down the end of the head stock which gives the illusion of there being twin timbers. I can confirm that the head stocks are one piece.

Steve
