Modelling SR Westinghouse half-disc ground signals
Help please!
I need some SR Westinghouse half-disc ground signals for a project I’m starting.
I would like these to be fully operational including a moving balance lever!
Several people have told me that, whilst a challenge, it’s possible to make the disc move using the MSE (GS002) kit but the balance lever is too fragile make to move as well. For me the balance lever movement is very noticeable on these ground signals so I would want it to move as well.
Am I mad (don’t all jump) or does anyone know a solution or alternative please?
Even better would be if anyone knows someone who can build me 4 working discs, including moving balance levers, for a price of course?
Many thanks
Steve

Re: Modelling SR Westinghouse half-disc ground signals
I had the fortune to meet Douglas Smith from the EMGS N.W. Surrey Area Group at ExpoEM recently. Douglas was demonstrating how he has developed models of the SR Westinghouse half-disc ground signal for their group layout 'Swaynton'. These signals consisted of a cast brass column and etched parts and were fully working including a moving balance lever!
I asked him about the possibility of producing some "kits" for me and he said he would consider it but a lot would depend on there being enough interest to justify have a new mould made for the brass column.
It turns out, following my recent postings on both RMweb and here, that someone else enquired at ExpoEM making a total of 8.
Douglas believes it is viable to have a mould made and produce more columns. He could then do a "kit" of brass column + etching for just under £5. (Postage would be extra) It would be nice if a few more people who were interested could be found as that would spread the mould cost over more people and bring the unit cost down a bit.
The EMGS website doesn't seem to have any facility at present for members to raise queries so he is thinking of putting a note in the next EMGS Newsletter asking if there were any more people interested in these signals. Unfortunately that won't come out till August so delaying matters. So I offered to post this on our Forum as well.
If anyone is interested please contact me. Many thanks
Here a couple of pictures. They look a bit coarse but you have to remember the whole thing is only 10mm high.
At least the balance lever moves!

Re: Modelling SR Westinghouse half-disc ground signals
I'd certainly be interested in 6 for starters, maybe more later after trials and comparison with the MSE ones. Looks like you could have the operating wire coming off the counterweight arm as an alternative to the disc itself.
Thanks for the heads up

Thanks to everyone who has kindly expressed an interest in these ground signals.
As soon as I have some more information I will post again to let everybody know.
I don't have any idea of timescales at the moment.
All the best
Steve

Hi
Just to let you know that I have just sent an email all those who have so far registered an interest in these disc signal kits so check your in boxes please.
Thanks

Hi Steve - is it too late to express an interest in some of these as well, please? (I'd certainly go for 6 myself).
Thanks.
Thanks.

Hi Steve,
Sorry I missed this earlier - could I put my hat in the ring for seven of these please?
Many thanks,
Howard

Re: Modelling SR Westinghouse half-disc ground signals
Mine have arrive today in da post, which is amazing in the first place, I much congratulate on the quality on the lost wax brass casting it is exquisite. the etch is cleaning done and the parts are really really tiny, I also like the provision of the transfers for the red band a nice touch which will of course save tring to get a crisp red band on these.
Now to find some time to build them.
Quality
whats next on the agenda ?

Is the lamp and post one casting? If not is the lamp solid or hollow?

They are great! And, contrary to the statement in the instructions, they can be made to work the prototypical way - though it does mean bushing the holes down with micro tube to reduce the slop.

That looks exquisite.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

If anyone is interested I still have the stock of these. Doug passed them onto me just before he died.

Re: Modelling SR Westinghouse half-disc ground signals
Hi All,
Thank you all for the intrest. The price is £2.50 a "kit" plus £2.00 p&p.
I'll PM those who have expressed interest above. If anyone else wants some please PM me and I will get back to you...eventually.
After the little package is sent out I'll email Doug's original "instructions" although I like to call them guidance notes. Plus if you want additional notes that I made up for installing onto the layout.
Here is one I am preparing to install on my little shunting plank/ demonstration piece.
I drilled a hole for a light, but need to source some 0.5mm fiber optic cable. Does anyone know a source?

Shapeways sell a set of 8 3D printed SR Westinghouse Ground Signals. You just need to supply the rotating disc.

Just to add that I can supply an etch containing a pair of disks, back-arms, balance levers and linkages. They are etched in 0.2mm N/S
Please PM me if interested.
They make up like this:-
