Coldfair Green crossing

A slightly grainy view of the level crossing taken at the workshop on 2nd May. Work was underway along the line, adding to the crossing keeper's garden, hence plastic container on track.

The crossing mechanism is one of John Watson's. He's made at least four over many years; most layouts seem to need a crossing once you've got a really good mechanism ! The electronics around it is my work, though only necessary for interlocking to signals and track power supply.

Nigel,

Am I right in saying that the motor used in this case is from a video camera? I have a few of these and am currently designing a mechanism using them to operate turnout indicators on my p87 layout 'Obbekaer'. Mine seem to work best on around 3 volts, so will need a separate control board to achieve the optimum speed.

What supply have you used for the level crossing?

Geraint,

The motor used is from the "scrap box" of useful bits, so original source unknown. It runs at a fair bit more than 3v, I'm reasonably sure it is driven by the 12v DC from a commercial switched-mode DC power supply which also operates the crossing control relays, plus the uncoupler magnets and the servo control boards (for turnouts and signals) on the adjacent baseboard. The speed reduction was achieved with various gears and gearboxes from the scrap box; selected to get the mechanism to run at "about the right speed". The mechanism was installed a lot more than a year ago, so not 100% certain on the operating voltage of the motor, and the layout isn't stored at my house to check it.

If you need 3v, then I'd expect that a really simple two-transistor DC speed control circuit should be sufficient to control your motor.
