Wagons full of rubbish...

Postby iak » Wed Dec 23, 2015 5:25 pm

Some items for use in a rake of wagons which will represent a spoil train....
More skannky decrepitude to trundle around the "Beastie..."

Image

The first one is a Cambrian Models C107 SR (Diag.1375) 5 plank Open Wagon.
This design was not just built for the Southern Railway but indeed, the LNER had a number produced to this basic design under various diagram numbers. Add to this, the diagram, 1/034, built by BR to this basic design and a jolly good time is envisaged… The sprung w-irons and from Bill Bedfords range and the buffers are from LMS, Dave Franks' buffers are the best around I think and are all I use. The one piece floor moulding has been used, the solebars having been thinned so the spring units go in. :thumb

Image

Image

The other two images are of a Parkside Dundas PC02A BR (Diag.1/039, 1/044) 13 Ton Open Wagon.
Based on an LMS design, a whole gamut of variations in underframes and brakes exist here. Indeed, the LMS built diagram was still in use in 1977 so I can logically produce a few dog-eared auld relics to go with the other pre-nationalisation beasties already being built for this "spoil train" project. MJT clasp brakes and LMS buffers are the details added so far...
And this beastie is not sprung or compensated

This seems to have been "the year of the wagon"! Lots of inspiring stuff from you and the other wagoneers on this forum.

Nice stuff, Ian, looking forward to more. It must be a wagon builders thing but I've just built both wagons as well. OK, the LMS version of the BR one, but there's not much difference. I wil post on them soon but not just yet. I have my reasons! Keep up the good work.

Hi Iak,

Just found this wagon topic. Looking very good too. Just a note on the SR open wagon: the LNER version of this diagram had standard thickness planking for the body work whereas the SR-built wagons had thinner planks, There was a slight variation in the number of bolts used to fix the planking to the corner plates. The SR wagons had fewer bolts - times must have been hard!

All the best,

Colin

The plank thickness difference Colin, is something I do not worry about - in 4mm its so small as to be potentially a wee OCD. And that I have enough of.... :)

The bolts issue will be addressed according to the images I'm working to - modelling chisel sharpening anyone? :thumb

Cambrian do a SR D1375 kit, unfitted but can be converted to BR retrofitted VB. I have one [somewhere] but that is going to have the SR's asymmetric 4-shoe VB, for which I have an etched kit [also somewhere].

Hi Iak,

I take your point about the thickness of the sides not being too important. Having said that, my two (unmade) Cambrian* SR open kits do have markedly thinner sides than the Parkside LNER equivalent wagons.

All the best,

Colin

*My brother runs Cambrian, but this is not a gratuitous plug!

True they are Colin but after some of my health issues of late.....
Its all relative... Sorry

And your brother can keep producing beasties like that kit - please :D

Hi Iak,

Yes, yes. Health issues do put everything in perspective don't they?

As for my brother's kits. I have been running a campaign for several years to get various wagon types produced. The risk for a small producer is that a major manufacturer could bring out a RTR version before tooling costs are recouped.

All the best,

Colin

Another thread of mine trashed by Photobucket...
Anyhow, the "spoil rake" has been progressing steadily of late as my health gets more stable.

A goodly number of Highfits and Lowfits are now in a similar state of play, as are some Grampus. You'd be right in thinking that they will be finished soon after Mr Newitts recent etches being released. :thumb
More soon.

Yes..reveal please.

Not only is ALL my threads here on S4 made redundant but my almost 80 page thread of over 10 years on SiF is reduced to nonsense and rubble also.

I have started using Imgur (yes I know same could happen later) but have kept the crap bucket potty with its lid off in case it can somehow be saved.

I recently requested my threads on here be deleted because of the destruction and need of restart. I'll hold a bit longer.

From this tip on Knuckles thread this morning

I've just zipped through the entire thread and i don't think there are any photos I can't see (certainly no placeholders with the Photobucket ransom demand). There was one a week or so ago but the latest update (installed here yesterday) may have dished it. Despite being a dedicated Apple user I only break into safari when I find something Firefox really can't do (much rarer these days than a few years ago) so can't provide the details right now.

The dearth of updates on activities at Padgate Works finally is coming to an end. A new image hosting site has provided a stimulus to reactivate my forum activities.
Mostyn is bound for Alexandra Palace in a few weeks time so the spoil rake, which has slowly been progressing for some time, is now nearing completion... I hope you can get an idea were things are upto. :thumb

Some more progress on the "spoil rake." This collection of shattered, banged up auld stock is ending its useful life in the service of the Engineering Department. All of the below are making their debuts at the annual Alexandra Palace this weekend. Mostyn will be entertaining the punters in its own unique way...
