Padgate Works - Wagon Erecting Shop
Well I thought I'd better post something to show for all my blethering on
Padgate works is only small but I think it shows how silly things can get
A basic auld Slaters kit or two gets a good thrashing
The printed sides will go once I've finished so onwards...
The end door assembly.
Nickel silver wire, some very small washers [16 BA?] and then some 0.5mm threaded nuts... http://www.scalehardware.com/product_tech_info/threaded-hex-nuts-c-2/0-5-mm-threaded-hex-nut-p-28
The end door, end on.
The LMS buffers look fab.
The coupling assembly again is an Exactoscale hook, Ambis plate and a home made 3-link.
The brake vee's are auld Masokits ones [waste not want not] with wire in to represent the retaining bolts; the brake levers/guides are some of the fabbo Craig Welsh etches.
More Scale Hardware bits are present but I'll let you figure out where...

All the bits and pieces here come from either Ambis or Wizard models.

I have been remiss in not giving a valuable reference for the CLC van mentioned earlier in the thread.
Go back over 29 years to the Railway Modeller for June 1983, page 228 - the article is titled "Vans for Cheshire Lines..."
David Goodwin produced an article on how to make 10T MR vans from the Slaters 8T kits - of course Slaters then brought out the blasted thing as a kit anyhow!
In it he explains and illustrates the CLC variants built in 1908 by the MR.
Get a hold of a copy if you are interested.

Well finally some progress.
That is, of course, after a long period of ill health
Those pesky medfits are getting some attention as one can see below.
The decals are being produced on a chums ALPS printer for these beasties.
The one that is lettered above will be getting redone as they are a wee bit too big.
The above shows the early stages of finishing the insides of these beasties.
More will follow soon and it will NOT take 12 months
To other things...
The last diagram ventilated vans BR produced in the early 1960's were the Diagram 1/224's
This batch of 9 for The Beeg Blue Beastie feature all the usual gubbins.
Buffers from LMS courtesy of Prof Franks
The brake etches are Ambis ones
Coupling hook assembled from Exactoscale hooks and instanters, the chain links being homebrew.
They run on Exactoscale & KM wheels.
Axleboxes come from Ambis, 51L and Exactoscale.
An Ambis axlebox etch - useful wee beasties...
The above show the process of getting the brake vees and such sorted.
Sorry but the nickel silver Ambis ones look better

I haven't seen much of the Ambis parts in progress so it's good to see them here. On the rare occasion they and I have coincided at a show I haven't had time for a proper look. Those axlebox covers look like a good idea. Dave Franks' buffers are fantastic aren't they. I know you don't use sprung buffers but I had some pre drilled heavy duty GWR ones arrive a few weeks ago from LMS for my Strip Coil. Beautiful work. I can just about manage drilling them out by hand for 1mm and 1.45mm shanks but I can never get the drill central enough of the 2.5mm shanks. Pre drilled heavy duty buffers from now on for me!
Nice to see some wagons with the LMS clasp brake as well. Those chassis got everywhere. I've got reaserch done for them. I'll get around to doing the artwork one day.

Too avoid a "guid skelpin," I'd better correct myself.
The coupling hooks on the 1/224's are from LMS as well - sorry Dave!!!
For the extended coupilngs BR used in later years, they are very nice.

An auld BR fish van being readied for a life as a knackered SPV van.
All the riveting/bolting is done using Archer decals.
The buffers are LMS ones again and the screw coupling is my usual Masokits/Exactoscale combo.
This Parkside kit has had the brake gear replaced by a mishmash of bits.
The sprung buffers are Bedford ones and the spring/axle-box assembly is MJT/51L
Apologies for the overexposed image, I deleted the wrong one!!!
Again, more to come soon

It's good to see you're back in full flow iak. Good work. I meant to ask you at the time you posted the images of your ex MR dia.363 Vans, where did you get the etched brackets "w" shaped and squarish on the sides; almost triangular on the ends?

Are you planning on modifying the RCH axleboxes on the vanfit to look more like BR ones? Removing the ribs above the 'box should do it.

I agree with you on the LMS buffers (although I'm going down the springing route with my fleet, which adds to the fiscal frettings ). Never tried ABS mind (although I have a book of stamps ready for the initial scoping..).
I lke the fold-up brake V etch. I'll deffo have to get my Enigma machine on the Ambis price list - sooner, rather than later!

And more activity stirs...
These two images show the Archer rivets decals off rather well I think.
The SPV in question seems to have had a pretty heavy repair/strengthening job done to it, hence the detailing. I am working from an image dated 1978 and I know the prototype had been in Derby for repairs in 1977. A venerable survivor then, it seems as its a first diagram/lots BR type, the ones with the LNER style of brake gear. I do wonder if Parkside could do the later type maybe? The new Hornby effort is another model of the earlier ones - annoying! The Parkside roof has also been discarded for a new one of a better size.
This odd view shows the end of the roof with fettling, proper overhang and all.
This close up shows were the brake lever should go and the look of the brake shoes, brake vee etc. Well worth the effort, as is using the Bill Bedford sprung w-irons - smooooth

iak... looking nice there. I just wish I patience with wagons... You are right about the BB springing it makes the wagons roll so smoooooothly.... bit like sprung loco's.... I know I have going to have to get into the wagon building mode at some time... bit like coachs.....and P4 layouts.... but I will stick to my locomotives.... Just wish I could swap a small loco for 10 wagons or so...
