Version II? Blimey, I thought I was the only one that couldn't finish anything before I dreamt up a "better" one.

At least the barrels should be recyclable. :D

The story of my life.........part complete.....dream up a better one..........
But I do think that this is all part of the learning curve.

Having, over the last 50+ years been involved in 3mm : 1', 3.5" gauge, 2" : 1' and many in between scale model making projects which have included ships, live steam traction engines and railways there has always been a cut off point. The closest I got to completing a model project was a 2" : 1' Burrell compound............all complete except for the gears........I did try to cut the gears myself but sort of failed......the alternative was to purchase but in the late '70's it was a cost a bit beyond that of a person with a young family.

As I get further into this project I know that it will be the first thing that I will have 'completed' in the 65 years of my life (a milestone I reached today..... :) )(And the bonus is that the government will be chucking a bit more disposable railway income my way.... :D )

So, as to the future.......I'll keep learning and hopefully improve whilst the grim reaper permits........

As to recycling.......err...........all stuff that does not move is Araldited.............

Great model Rob! Just re boilers in the open, colliery boilers often were out in the open, however, a roof would always be provided to shelter the firebeaters (there were no "stokers" unless of the mechanical variety!). So perhaps a little corrugated iron roof over the firehole end could be rigged up without being too obtrusive?

Best wishes,

Thanks Howard............a point taken for VII.........but did you not notice the umbrella stand...... ;)

Indeed happy birthday... hopefully your wearing more today than all those years ago

I think your layout will look fantastic doing the left hand end. I believe that if you start building things like this there will always be something extra you want to achieve but other people see it as complete. (In a bit the way that people always say that their layout is not yet complete) in a lot of the ways I see the journey being the interesting bit and the end result nice to have but no longer of all that much interest. This is what happened with the black hawthorn with me. I would not give up the little loco but it doesn't get much attention in the way my RSH is at the moment. (up date coming soon I promise)

all the best and happy birthday
Doug

Well the specialist said everything was where it was supposed to be! So that is good. Back to him in 2 weeks hopefully all ok by that time... At least the pain has subsided. Actually really good so I have to be careful as I don't get any notice if I do something I shouldn't. The good thing is I can get some modelling done... I guess I will be using my left hand to shake the can of primer! For the RSH ! :D

The last of the 12,000 or so setts stuck down, 2 more buildings completed.
Just a load of little bits and bobs to complete, another loco and some wagons to build plus the fiddle yards.

It's good to hear that someone has been doing some modelling, Rob - things were getting very quiet on the forum generally, especially since spam was banished :D

It is looking great, with loads of atmosphere :thumb

ROb what can I say.. it is great. it has everything you need for half an hours shunting at the end of a day with a glass or wine. The detailing from here on will always be little improvements... I still think you should be extremely happy with what you have achieved in such a relatively short time.

Keen to see the next installment of the rolling stock!

Thanks Richard and Doug for you comments.
Gonna take a short rest now, flying out to Cyprus and then cruising around the Med ending up in the Canary Islands.

As Rob disappears on a well deserved holiday, here's a little something. Last weekend John McAleely and I visited Rob and viewed his exquisite little layout.

Whilst there have been pictures of the stationary boiler on here before, I don't think any of them quite show the eye for composition and colour that this one does.

Happy New Year everyone............guess it is time for an update.
It took quite a while to get back into the swing of things after our short holiday. Since returning I have fully moved from the garage into winter quarters, the front bedroom!

A couple of boards with cassettes can now be attached at either end of the layout so I can now play trains.

Work still continues on finishing off little bits of detail. Wagons are slowly emerging from the 'wagon shops'. I have ordered another RSH to keep No 1 company.

Great work Rob :thumb which provokes a few questions. Did you CSB the second RSH? Is the lack of a tourque reaction link proving to be a problem? How are the Dinghams working for you?

Cheers,

David

David,
Yes, the 2nd RSH is also CSB'd as is a third chassis currently on the go (potograph below).

After our last about torque reaction link I did in fact fit one to all the locos. The method I adopted allows the motor just to move in the vertical plain. I think the photo illustrates the method, just a bit of fret waste bent up and attached with a 10ba screw.
Am slowly sorting the Dinghams out..........maintaining a consistent height, getting the loop and latch to move freely, all have caused minor probs but am getting there.

Hi Jim,
The thread has about run its course.
This project has really been about getting something completed quickly, something that worked satisfactorily and something to give me a load more experience. I can now treat this as a 'maquette' for the next brewery layout which I have started although getting Manston ready for Scaleforum is taking up the time at the moment.
A new thread will be started once I get going again......

Interesting Rob. Nice new approach that ought to work just as required.

I suppose logically there is a possibility that the strip might bend back or forward if the chassis was putting up a lot of resistance, but at that point I suspect the chassis needs more basic attention than worrying about the reaction link working properly.

In reality the strip does flex slightly and was only fitted for the purpose of testing just the chassis. The design is such that the motor sits snugly on the removable lower boiler section. The space between the top of the motor and the top of the saddle tank is filled with lead so at most there is only about 1mm of movement.

I too am really looking forward to seeing Manston in the flesh - I'll be on the stand next door pushing the SGW concept.

(And I'll bring along a few wedges to prevent that massive pile of barrels falling down - I still worry...)
