Re: Bristol Barrow Road

Thank you all for your kind comments. As with all roundhouses if the turntable does not function all roads radiating to/from it will become blocked and stock will be isolated until a repair is made. There is no other access. The two turntables at the rear of the shed are for loco access to the four ...

Re: Bristol Barrow Road

It has been a while since I did any work on the roundhouse roof so I recently added the smoke hood support wires, 4 to each hood, to the 22 that are inside the shed. The roof is entirely scratchbuilt from brass section and nickel silver wire. The smoke hoods are of two types - 3 older wooden types w...

Hi Paul, Maybe I haven't read your post correctly but are you applying the glue when the chair is in contact with the ply sleeper? This is the method I use. I read you post as applying glue to the ply sleeper and then placing the chair or your plan B apply glue to the chair and then position on the ...

Re: Uncompensated 16T Bachmann Minerals in P4

Gordon, Here is a video of 14 wagons being propelled into the Coaling Plant storage siding at the shed. As you can see it crosses a turnout and double slip without any problem. The fact that the track from the signal box turnout to the end of the cork is on a downward gradient might help! aUkj_RgsKn...

Re: Uncompensated 16T Bachmann Minerals in P4

Paul, Wagons on my earlier layout Sheep Pasture were all 50g using a 25g per axle formula. This weight per wagon proved too heavy on my current layout hence my decision to lower the weight of my wagons to enable trains of 30 wagons to be run. Your 1.8g per foot formula is interesting but not one I h...

Re: Uncompensated 16T Bachmann Minerals in P4

Gordon, In the storage sidings the rake of 30 propel fine on the straight but two wagons derailed on the B7 crossover onto the main line. In their defence 10 wagons had already successfully negotiated it and moved onto the curved end boards. I'm not too concerned as I do not envisage reversing wagon...

Uncompensated 16T Bachmann Minerals in P4

To the north of Bristol Barrow Road shed and Lawrence Hill Junction there is an incline on an 1 in 60 gradient to Fishponds Station in the NE of Bristol. The gradient starts at 1 in 89 immediately under Barrow Road Arches, which is the road which bisects the shed yard. The working timetable limits t...

Re: CMX Track Cleaner P4 Conversion

I've just done a conversion to P4 using a pair of Masokits freight bogies and lowmac Alan Gibson wheels. The bogies I 'beefed up' by soldering 0.45 wire along the back of the bogies to deal with the 300g weight of the tank. I also fabricated buffer beams using double sided copper clad to replace the...

Re: Bristol Barrow Road

Hi Julian, Bristol Barrow Road is DCC and is operated with NCE equipment. I have the 5amp command unit with Procab handheld units. The Black 5 is the only loco I have which uses Masokits front bogies but I have several other sets of them to use on other Hornby Black 5s and maybe Bachmann Jubilees. B...

Julian,

The motor and gearbox are Hornby as supplied in the loco. The short answer is I don't know the ratio but Philip is probably right.

Re: Bristol Barrow Road

I am continuing the debugging of the track. Following the test of the turnouts from the Up main line into the engine shed with the 3F - shown in the previous videos - testing with my Hornby Black 5 showed that all was not well with the double slip. The Black 5 had an annoying habit of mounting the c...

Re: Brian Morgan TOUs

Hi Dave, You are correct the gap on the blades on this double slip are in need of adjustment and are on my list. This was my first double slip and as it has only recently been wired tests have revealed 0-6-0s negotiate without any problems but longer wheel base engines with pony trucks tend to foul ...

Re: Brian Morgan TOUs

Here are a couple of photos of the modified double slip as used on Brinkley the Glevum Group layout. This layout uses Lemaco motors which gave additional problems driving the Double slip. As the unit was installed on the layout I modified it by removing the cranked levers and substituting a one piec...

Re: Brian Morgan TOUs

The double slip poses a number of problems not found with the standard TOU or the single slip. The double slip has a pair of crank arms at each end as designed. The original instructions - I don't know if Brian amended them - suggest operating the double slip using the two cranks, one at each end, a...

Thanks David I thought you may have fabricated them. I did something similar with the fiddle yard on Sheep Pasture. I was hoping you had found some I could buy off the shelf.

Re: Stour Valley Dream - progress on P4 layout

Hi Dave, Nice video and good to see the full extent of your layout. You have a steel? locking plate and slide bolt in the corner near the houses - is this home made or a bought in item. The reason I ask is I am looking for something similar to lock and align the lift out section on my layout. Keep u...

Re: Brian Morgan TOUs

Hi Steve, These TOUs do require a 'T' shape slot to be cut in your baseboard to accommodate the tufnol operating arm and the crank lever. I made up a jig when fitting the units to Barrow Road - I have the measurements I used somewhere. The brass base plate covers the hole. The single units operate w...

Re: Bristol Barrow Road

Hi Dave, I'm pleased with the Black 5. It is a Hornby model to which I added Gibson P4 wheels after adding width to the chassis by gluing 40thou plasticard spacers to the chassis before attaching Alan Gibson brass frames as a cosmetic only addition. As you may know the Hornby model has a sprung rear...

Re: Bristol Barrow Road

I say temporary because it only controls the turnouts at present as I have yet to build the signals. Chris has built in interlocking on the junction using rel...
