It is almost 2 years since the vandalism on the NYMR caused great anger among many rail enthusiasts as well as a large number of the general population who were keen to help. In the current case, donations seem to be coming from around the globe, some of them substantial, some not so large but an a...

I would use a 5 sided cutting broach to take it from 2mm to reaming dia and then a 3mm reamer.

Re: Bridge arch question
Actually it is NOT an ellipse it is either a 3 point arch or a 5 point arch.
Any decent practical geometry book will tell you haw to set it out.
The reason it's not an ellipse is because it would be a nightmare for the carpenters to make the false work.

Dave, I shall follow your method, but use an airbrush rather than spray cans to apply the paint, which I was thinking would be better gloss rather than matt. On the subject of paint: are there standard colours for levers i.e. signal red and signal yellow. And what about the shade of blue used for l...

I have been enjoying reading John Hayes' The 4mm Coal Wagon. In it he suggests using silver steel tube and bar filed and shaped to form punches to allow the punching out of various shapes from styrene sheets. Does anyone have a handy supplier of such material? :thumb Eillen's Emporium? regards Alan

Venetian Red is an Iron Oxide pigmented paint. As is Indian Red - called Indian Red as it used a particular Haematite ore imported from India which gave it a purplish hue.

For a time BR laid crossings with vertical rail.
Also Swiss rail doesn't have any inclination and North American rail has a 1:40 inclination.

I use Precision varnish. For satin I use two parts gloss and one part matt. You must use the varnish thinners however. To use ordinary thinners runs the risk of getting a white bloom.

Re, locking the lever catches, what about just using a scale version of those metal 'egg cup' thingies that can be slipped over the lever handles, thus preventing the catch handle from being moved? It is not very hi-tech perhaps, but they use this method on the local preserved line, the Gwili Railw...

Hi Colin, I did say my maths on expansion was a little rusty, it's over 40 years since I last needed to work out the expansion of anything. I used 5C as the temperature at which the rail was laid to give the maximum expansion range, whereas I suspect you probably laid the track 10 to 15 degrees war...

Hello Alan, Yes, I was aware of the temperature range of -17C to 53C is used in the calculation of expansion of prototype UK steel rail, but forgot to include the information in my reply. Re: Construction of a Test Track
Hello Phil, prototype data would suggest that a steel rail 18.5 m long requires a maximum expansion gap of 14.3 mm: https://pwayblog.com/2016/03/04/maximum-joint-expansion-gap/ It appears that both heat and expansion are not scaleable, so for steel rail the expansion range is 0.77 mm (rounded to tw...

But can you scale heat???
The scale section is irrelevant. A solid bar of steel the same length would expand the same.
