Re: Socially Distanced Challenge – CR Class 488 Build
Lindsay, Charles, Lovely job shaping up there - am feeling almost wistful that I did not undertake a build of this for Jim Pairman before I retired. Bunker/footplate - I am puzzled. Photo of 1167 seems clearly to show (despite unfortunate masking by a porter's arm) the footplate continuing under the...

Re: When did aerials become common place?
I have a vague memory from the early 1960s, being told that the 'H' aerial was for BBC and the 'cross-bars' for commercial transmissions - does this strike a chord? Cue wonderful memory from late 1970s, visiting girl friend off Mile End Road, her landlord telling his two young lads "well, as yo...

Err... but wouldn't the hole float upwards to the ceiling?! Or, thinking about it more, just hover invisibly in front of you? Discuss....... (Hat, etc...................) Lovely stuff Mark; and memories of over 50 years ago, trying to line a Festiniog (as was then) 'Prince' from the GEM kit; first t...

Lovely stuff, Andy -especially the Wheeler and Gregory pair - I have a fair stash of those for Earl Waldegrave wagons and other Radstock collieries. I am thinking of a batch-build of bodies, for now.....

Re: 1P 0-4-4T chassis by Rumney
Hi John, thanks for the encouragement! Just for now, I will add that I am using an etched brass (with NS chassis, some of the details to be used in this build) JM Models of Paulton, kit for the superstructure; picked up at a S4 North 'Bring and Buy' yonks ago. (JM = John Maidment...??) Richard Dagge...

Oops, forgot to say:
In the prototype photo in my last post, you can see, below the brake crank and silhouetted against the further bogie wheel, the curved end of the rear ashpan damper lever. This is depicted in Tom Lindsay's drawing - published in MRN in 1966/7?

Re: 1P 0-4-4T chassis by Rumney
I have been back to my Rumney chassis build recently, after too long a break for house-activities, and pleased to follow Mark's thread with so much useful feedback from all. My own version is for the mechanically very similar SDJR Avonside 0-4-4T No. 31, and last night reached rolling chassis stage;...

Wonderfully simple jig for the bushes, Mark - I have slaved over many a set of those without thinking of doing that! Those are superb double-hanger assemblies - very well done, thanks for posting. I will shortly have seven loco chassis brake assemblies under construction, in 'staggered parallel', so...

Re: Trap points
Neil, On further reading, I now understand that you are referring to the trap point within the headshunt, a shade west of the end of the engine shed opposite. This, too, is illustrated in Mitchell and Smith, plate 109; this is a 1960s era view, and again clearly shows a single trap point at this loca...

Re: Trap points
Hi Neil, Second attempt at a reply - first one gone into ether... Have you got Mitchell and Smith's Middleton Press album "Branch Line to Swanage" over there? Plate 91 is a 1955 view showing single traps on the two siding roads which converge under the road bridge. Is this where you mean? ...

Re: Non Railway Modelling
Interesting! Yet I can almost 'hear' the sounds associated with that lovely MTB and its superb turning wake: the engine roar, the slap of the hull slicing through the waves, and not least, the churning of the wake itself.... A stunning recreation, John.

Julian, Horse, Re the unusual tender.. It originated behind a SDJR 1914 series engine, and had a tender cab prior to ca 1920-22. I understand some mods were made for it to be attached to 1000, but the front side-sheet profile is the give-away. The curve does not begin immediately in front of the fro...

Hi Dave, Thanks - good news! We are drying out after a badly-timed fortnight in Lewis - mind you, Lewes seems to have had it just as bad. But the sun shone for two days in Balerno en route home, and just had a great weekend here, introduced my cousin to Tan Hill Inn. We go again, end of August, NW S...

Superb job, Dave; having the 'corks' as well is a bonus.
I have, sadly, 'missed the boat' for Caley builds, but your universal four-coupled rods are nicely timed for forthcoming S&D, and other, 4-4-0s..
Order to follow!
Cheers,
Steve

Thanks John, I have had a look at the full image, and would agree with you on the fourth maroon vehicle being a 12wh one. Even allowing for it being further round the curve, it looks significantly longer than the preceding carriages. Down Pines sound a good bet, I note there are destination boards o...

Fascinating detective work on the ex GWR carriage... John, do you know what the working was; I am puzzled by a WR strengthening coach on an LMR express (presumably) to the south coast?

Thanks Pete, that's good of you - I would like two etches please, no rush at all though. I am on a similar but parallel path to John! I am building the first Rumney chassis for an old JM models kit for the SDJR 'Avonside' 0-4-4T, the smaller of their two classes. I have the basic footplate and body ...

Re: MR 1P 0-4-4T detailing
That is uncanny timing, Pete - I have only just started on one of Justin's chassis etches, as a pilot scheme for a pair of SDJR 0-4-4T that I am building. Both designs differ above the footplate from the MR version, but the chassis dimensions are essentially the same as for the MR version, I am pres...
