Keep it simple - just a plain old right angle! I suspect the shape of hook you suggest will be more likely to catch in the links as you're trying to pull it away.

Chris, After years on the end of a shunter's pole exhibiting Middlepeak, I reached the conclusion that the best tool was a short piece of 0.3mm nickel-silver wire mounted in a pin chuck, with the last 3mm or so bent to a right angle.
