Re: Mike G's catch up.
Hi Yes, the County is 4-6-0 as Ivan has said. Origins were Falcon. The only bits that made it to the final model were the cabsides and foot plate - and that was shortened. Everything else was scratched. Now residing on Ultrascale wheels, HL g/box with a 1420 and Comet chassis with Gordan Ashton Spri...

Re: Mike G's catch up.
Dave Those are for the Std class 5 (from the Gibson kit) - which is waiting for it's gearbox and motor to arrive, I know Chris has supply problems at the moment. On another note, what about one of the loctite brews for your tender problem? 501 or 503. Both cure in the absence of air and are very thi...

Re: Mike G's catch up.
So, having curred my Counties inability to turn corners without throwing a hissy fit and curred the running - this involved driving wheels off and a new motor and gearbox. So I have now exhauted all my HL gearboxes supply and am now waiting for Mr Gibbon to send more! Anyway, having curred most prob...

Re: Mike G's catch up.
Hi John B set, 2 * M set and a few strays. So twelve in total. I think it'll be worth the effort. But as they're still in development...I'll crack on with the shelf of shame. Just need some gearboxes to turn up! I've been trying to work out why my County shorts, curred that today, now it runs like a...

Re: Mike G's catch up.
Having finished putting the springing units into the bogies it was time to mate them with the coach I'd already built. IMG_1805.jpg I think these have really added something to the coach and the fact that they are a scale width DOES make a difference. Looking forward to a GWR range to retro-fit. Sta...

Re: Mike G's catch up.
Doug I’ve ordered a couple of the g/boxes that have the rotating part at the bottom. I’m sure with a bit of gratuitous violence and a bit of luck it should be ok. The finish on the Brit is down to a very Matt varnish - Trstors I think. The other engines were gloss varnished first and then I used acr...

Re: Mike G's catch up.
Ivan The valencing wasn't the problem. The problem is how to get a gearbox and motor in it. The back of the cab joins to a great slab of whitemetal for the back of the firebox - both are full height, which in turn restricts the fitting of a g/box! Fortunately, the clever people at Dremel do some ver...

The wheels were Ultrascale on 5625. So I'm hoping they'll pull off and go back on with the wheel press. They went on dead plum - no wobble.

Re: Mike G's catch up.
Steve That's a DJH kit - with alot of detail added. Comet chassis, the last of the Sharman's wheels that I have, masokits sprung bogie and my own design for the sprung pony and tender. High level road runner and a 1624 up the spout. Runs sweetly, if I could upload the iphone video you could see. I m...

Mike G's catch up.
So I've been off work now for 3 months. Just as well to make the most of this time, as it's unlikely to come around again. A lot of unfinished projects waiting for final touches. Wagons, coaches and engines. Starting with a very long outstanding project. Britania class 7, Western Star 70025. I've be...

I think you have one of my trial etches for a BR STD tender that demonstates that same point. I have been thinking of using the High Level spacer saver bearings and re-designing the chassis.
Sorry to hi-jack

Markits do 2 types of washout plug. Page 5b..M4WASHD & M4WASHi. The first are the disc type.
Like the build, thanks for all the help and yes I have one too. It will come after the other 56xx and 42xx and they won't be started untill I finish the Std cl5.

Re: The Socially-Distanced Challenge - Registration Thread
So, my shelf of shame is slowly deminishing. I define my shelf as these projects started and still incomplete. Not unstarted kits. Finished the 56xx (bar a bit of further weathering, which will happen this evening once the temp goes down), 2 * 16t mins completed and the Brit and crew are all being s...

Re: Brassmasters Blk5 45232
Mike, the loco is powered by a 1616 Portescap driving the centre axle. This is one of the cement mixer sound-alike examples! The main drawback is that the sides/bottom edges of the firebox have to be thinned to a frightening degree to allow the motor to pass up. A 14 mm wide motor would be a lot ea...

Re: Brassmasters Blk5 45232
Hi Dave How far down the boiler does the lead shot go? Mike Mike, About to the boiler/smokebox junction. I'm hoping to keep the additional weight mainly over the driving wheels. I found with previous fully sprung locos, a bit of weight juggling is required to get them to sit level. Dave. That makes...

Re: Motors for locos
I've heard good things about the 14 series of motors. Given their capacity, I wouldn't be afraid to use them in a large engine. On my shelf of shame sits a 42xx, this has a HL g/bx with a motor from here: https://www.cctrans.org.uk/ You can read about these motors on the website. Just another one to...

Re: Stanier 3P - Judith Edge Kit
Pete I use the P4 spacers from Comet - have done for years - always found them to be sound, but you will have to put a/some washers on the front axle. Thanks Mike, yes I did consider this. Presumably you need to washers if using High Level blocks? I'm thinking of using Comet blocks with the CSB ada...

Re: Bachmann Mk1 Coach Upgrade
If you really want to upgrade your mk1, then download the Masokits catalogue and advance to page 4. Mike has produced some lovely etches to lift the Bachmann coach. Be warned, these are fiddly, but worth the effort. I can't see much on that sprue that shouldn't be on the Bachmann coach already. http...
