Re: Brassmasters Blk5 45232
Thanks to the two Dave's for identifying the use of Wire Gauge in the loco drawings. To help me in future builds, I've done a spreadsheet that takes the values off the drawing and identifies the prototype and 4mm scale external dimensions. From this, it shows the nearest equivalent wire sizes that a...

Re: Brassmasters Blk5 45232
Dave, Thanks for the clarification. A quick search came up with a suitable conversion chart. I can now calculate the OD of the steam pipes controlling the delivery of sand (3/8" bore 10 IWG) as: 0.128" + 0.375" + 0.128" = 0.631". Elsewhere on the drawing, the pipe is held wi...

Re: Brassmasters Blk5 45232
I've been using the drawings in the Wild Swan books for some of the pipework on a Jinty. I've struggled with converting the drawing's pipe specification into the external diameter to give the best size of wire to use on the model. For example, the steam pipes controlling the delivery of sand are sho...

Re: Martin Finney V2
Not a V2 but the left hand side of GWR Prairie 6106 at Didcot, but it shows how little clearance there can be on the prototype between a crosshead and coupling rod boss. If that axle has any side play, then there'll be trouble.

Re: Hold and Fold Tools
As I managed without one for about 30 years, then they certainly aren't a must-have item for the tool box. I find the main benefit is for small items with a double fold, when it can give a solid grip for the second fold. I also used it yesterday as a general purpose clamp for holding High Level loco...

Re: Hold and Fold Tools
I bought the RP Toolz RP-13 a year or so ago and have found it useful for wagons and locos. I was pleased with the weight and build of the tool; it isn't a flimsy little thing.
As Flymo says, this size will do most things for 4mm modelling except coach sides.

Re: Chassis Speed Building - Records and Methods
I go for split axles with custom made frame spacers, Mashima motors and High Level gearboxes and use the Avonside Chassis Squared jig. I've no idea on the construction time spent but the 2 locos that I've nearly finished were started in 2007 and 2010 if that helps. None of this is any reflection on ...

Re: Progress with Slattocks Junction
As one of the visitors who was able to test wagons and coaches on Slattocks, I was very grateful for the opportunity. I was able to identify a few minor issues to resolve which my test track at home wouldn't show. The hospitality was excellent; everyone was free to get on with whatever they wanted: ...

I passed this query on to to a friend with an interest in the S&D, who in turn circulated it around an S&D group. I offer the following response from a retired S&T engineer in that group. "It is a Gainstroke Lever, used where there is an excessive pull of wire to a remote signal. It...

Re: British Railways Container liveries
Hi Noel, The photo on page 7 of Kingsbridge is one of my all time favourite photos as it shows so much of the everyday operation. I had originally dismissed BD49865B as it had the Door to Door logo, but maybe it shows original maroon under a bauxite repaint from the 60's. It shows what a minefield i...

Re: British Railways Container liveries
Hi Noel, Thanks for the reply. When I said crimson, I meant maroon, so that clears up that part. My original idea was to model the container in my photo. The number BD50424B is visible top left of the end doors so I know the build details. However, as it will be sitting in a bauxite liveried 5 plank...

British Railways Container liveries
I am trying to decide between crimson and bauxite livery for a BD container as running in 1962. I photographed this condemned one at Salisbury in the early - mid 80's, which appears to be in faded bauxite livery. This one was built in 1957 and appears to be in its original livery, i.e. no late 60's ...

Re: Carriage loading docks
I'm sorry I haven't answered the original question, but I think I've learnt something from the responses. In WW2, an anti-aircraft battery operated next to the station, so this may explain the concrete as a wartime upgrade. Unfortunately, the bay and battery were on opposite sides of the railway, so...

Re: Carriage loading docks
Nothing definitive I'm afraid, but this photo shows the remains of the end loading dock at Thurstaston, my chosen prototype. Thurstaston 2004 loading dock stop block.jpg My interpretation is that the bolts near the top of the vertical front would have supported some wooden baulks for the buffer stop...

I found a link from the GWR Modelling site to a page by Ian Rathbone http://www.ianrathbonemodelpainting.co.uk/gwr-locomotive-liveries-1923-39.php which says Venetian Red, which is the same as Red Oxide. Steve,
There is a photo of Siphon F number 1543 in the first built livery in the HMRS book. If you PM me your email, I'll send you a scan.
The book also states "capacity was 18 tons and average tare weight around 22 tons". The locations for these are clear on the photo.
