Re: 101 Not Out - 12th March 2016

A very pleasant and informative four and a bit hours spent at the event yesterday. Well done to everyone involved. Had time to kill afterwards before heading back to the coast so took the advice of Martin Goodall and popped into the national gallery. Haven't been in quite some time but was well wort...

Re: Swanage.

That's terrible news, hopefully the damage isn't irreversible.

Re: Scaleforum 2015

To all concerned This was my first Scaleforum, having been a member since some time in July, and I have to just say what a thoroughly enjoyable day it was. Arrived at opening (half 10) and left at close (half five). Learned some terribly useful information so thanks to Andrew Ullyott for some very p...

Re: Old Head

afternoon all I haven't any photos to accompany this post as I don't think there isn't anything visually interesting to show yet. I've started laying the outside rail on the layout. I've quickly learnt that Butanone really does not smell good. Using it next to two open windows makes it somewhat more...

Re: Old Head

Thanks for the responses guys.
The same has been recommended by those outside this forum as well so it seems logical to go with that.
I'll see if my nearest craft shop has any otherwise i'll order it from C&L.

Re: Old Head

Work continues...

Quick question before I post a longer update tomorrow, what kind of solvent would people recommend for fixing chairs to plywood sleepers? If PVA works then terrific but I can't imagine it will

Re: Old Head

The arrival yesterday of some plywood sleepers means the beginning is not too far away now. Just need some chairs and all systems go on the track building front. I've also started on a small building for the layout of which I will post some photos over the weekend hopefully/probably. This is all ter...

Re: Old Head

Turnouts will be included much later on the "grand" extension later on in the year after this initial bit is built. I'm still finalising a trackplan for that though. I want to get confident enough that I can build a layout that will actually allow trains to run on it before I start anythin...

Re: On building track - straight onto the baseboard?

Thanks for that Martin, I wouldn't have probably taken that into consideration... Photos if the Midland Great Western in in County Mayo during the 1900s/1910s are few and far between. Most of what I have seen seems to be bullhead, however, I will keep looking, especially at sidings before I begin la...

Re: On building track - straight onto the baseboard?

As Keith said, this will be the end of a siding alongside a small country road in rural Ireland, hence going straight onto the baseboard. The track will be in a pretty sorry state. Thanks for the diagrams though. When the rest of the layout is built (in the second half of 2015 sometime), then underl...

Re: On building track - straight onto the baseboard?

Some very interesting points made here since my initial question. For the current project, which has no turnouts, will be built directly onto the baseboard with no underlay for mainly scenic purposes. When this is extended, I'll most likely build the turnouts on my workbench and plain track on the b...

Re: On building track - straight onto the baseboard?

Some interesting points there. The reason I was asking about the underlay was because I was under the impression that it helped with suspension? I think with how simple what I'm building will be, straight onto the baseboard will be most appropriate. If underlay is not essential then that will be mos...

Re: On building track - straight onto the baseboard?

Quite the opposite Jim, any responses are very helpful. Being new to the world P4 I'm intrigued by people's different methods. One question though, why do you not use underlay? From what I've read this seems relatively vital? Considering that what I'm looking at building at the moment I'll probably ...

On building track - straight onto the baseboard?

Just a quick question. I wanted to get an idea of what people may recommend when building track. The choice seems to be a) build straight onto the baseboard (using underlay of course) or b) building up trackwork separate from the baseboard and laying it when complete as one would do with ready to pl...

Old Head

Good Morning all Being new to the forum (and by extension, the society as well), I thought I should get round to making the time to start a thread to chart the progress of my new (very) small layout. This will be my first go at building anything to P4 standards. Not being one to make life easy for m...
