I hope so, Rod! Although we didn't get any comments on the Protocab trader page, which must tell us something!

Re: Earning a Living talk
One of the best jobs I did in my 8 years on Southern Region was the platform workings at Brighton, which, once the layout is ever completed, I intend to resurrect and put into practice. You'd think that allocating trains to 9 platforms would be easy. Not a bit of it, it was an art! Great talk, Jim! ...

Model buildings using a craft cutter
Going to head off now, got to catch the train... or, in fact, catch the last of the sun to do some more track laying... with my P4 layout I'm trying to lay grass, with this one I'm trying to get rid of it! Btw, the trackwork is being designed on Templot! Essential for the transition curve in the dis...

Re: Lewes
Hey Terry! Worrabart my Brighton layout?? Can't that join in? The MPD trackwork is now complete, the turntable finished (took ages to find out which one it was) and now about to fit point drives. Phase 2 will be the station, ready about 2145 (the year, not the time!) Hope you are enjoying the show! ...

I haven't had 'er indoors complaining about how much I'm spending... also I don't need a huge carrier bag to transport across the car park.

Excellent choice for a layout!
Will you be featuring the flooding that regularly hounded the London platforms?

Re: Trader links from virtual Scaleforum not working
Thanks, Matt, no problem - these things happen (it's one reason it took us 7 years to develop Protocab!)
Excellent show so far though!

Re: Penhafod Upper - 1978
Thank you for your further work on the pulling sequence and locking table, Keith, very much appreciated. I have amended my copy and posted in at 'The Other Place' as version 3.1.2. I'm now reading up on dog charts.... I think I might be able to get away with 4 tappet bars, in which case it could be ...

Re: Penhafod Upper - 1978
Doh! I knew there was something.... nagging at the back of my mind as I published it... yes, thanks for your offer. I'll have a go at it before Sunday and perhaps you'd 'mark my work', please, Keith?? By the way, trap 19 and FPL 20 are now history and plain line on platform 2 is now restored! I've a...

Re: Penhafod Upper - 1978
Hello Philip Yes, you are right, it's a very intense service, but on the basis of exhibition layouts needing to have some movement within no more than a couple of minutes, it's a very contrived timetable. The layout started life as a trial of Hubert Carr's Geodeck baseboard system back in 1978 and t...

Re: Penhafod Upper - 1978
Yes, the Tyers instrument with the key tokens would have been given up on leaving the block section... to clarify, Keith, the LAYOUT was started in 1978, it depicts the era around 1959, so autotrains might still be pertinent... there's a philosophical argument here... if I say the model is based at ...

Many thanks for the time you have taken to provide a very detailed response to my latest diagram, Keith. I have now read the document in detail and there are significant changes. Re: Thoughts on Motors
Nigel makes a very important point about the efficiency of gearboxes. I can't claim any expertise on them, but I think it's notable that the Portescap motor/gearbox combos use(d) spur gears rather than worms. I think the main problem with worms is that there has to be some play to accomodate the for...

Re: Thoughts on Motors
I should add to that last sentence the paradox that we usually recommend that you choose the largest battery that you can find space for. We should also add that high quality motors with as many segments as possible, a high quality gearbox, properly lubricated and well meshing with minimum friction ...

Re: Thoughts on Motors
Thank you, Jon, for your further note clarifying usefully your concerns. 2mm scale is what we call in technical terms 'a challenge'! But we intend to satisfy the many 2mm modellers who are Club Protocab members. The issue is that the manufacturers and individual modellers are somewhat hamstrung by t...

Re: Thoughts on Motors
Responding to Jon's thread, at Acc+Ess we fully understand his concerns. He is right that lithium ion can present a safety issue if handled incorrectly, but these issues have been known since the 1970s when lithium batteries first appeared. This link gives a very good summary IMHO of the issues and ...

Re: Penhafod Upper - 1978
Thanks for the heads up on Kidder.. Although I can see the reasons why the SVR would have wanted to have everything under sbox control, and it may have been a Railway Inspectorate requirement, it would have made good theatre for the visitors to watch the fireman releasing the loco under g/f control....

Re: Penhafod Upper - 1978
Some excellent replies, many thanks.. Drat time on the platform end gantry, Keith... I have already made up (quite a few years ago) a two arm gantry with what is now shown as signals 16 and 19 at the ends, so moving 19 inboard to accommodate the shunt signal 18 to its left is going to be a grrr mome...

Re: Penhafod Upper - 1978
...sorry, addendum to my last, I meant 'assume that the crossovers don't need FPLs in the trailing direction, i.e. the point on the Goods Loop South.' I understand that the platform point would need an FPL in the facing direction for passenger movements, so releasing this frm the box would enable th...
