North East Essex Area Group (NEEAG)

We are a small group formed in 2012. We meet in Colchester which is convenient not only for the north east of Essex, but also for Society members who live in southern Suffolk. We are a friendly group with a wide range of skills, abilities and interests who meet once a month to enjoy our hobby. We are fortunate in being able to use the commodious premises of the Colchester Society of Model and Experimental Engineers (CSMEE) for our meetings, where there is ample space to undertake varied activities, as well as providing facilities for the essential tea, coffee and biscuits.

Our meetings are very informal, although we do try to arrange a variety of activities not only to keep our interest up, but also for mutual improvement and education. Our members’ modelling interests are very diverse, covering pretty much the whole gamut from pre-grouping to the present day.

Members of NEEAG gathered around a table with a test track under discussion. A group of NEEAG members learning to use an RSU.

A number of our members have exhibition layouts and there are opportunities to help out with setting up and operating these. We have also been treated to a display of some of our hosts’ big models running under their own power on the extensive outdoor track that is part of the CSMEE facility.

Our practical sessions are designed to help members improve their skills such as chassis construction and track building. Given the wide range of expertise among our members there is plenty of scope for acquiring new skills as well as passing on knowledge.

We also arrange occasional talks on modelling related subjects: casting, etching, 3D printing and Templot have all featured and been appreciated by those members present. We also hold occasional film nights and semi-formal discussions on topics such as modelling photography and resistance soldering.

Meeting nights are always a good opportunity to bring along a current project for people to admire or provide advice or assistance where problems have occurred.

We are actively contemplating building a group layout and, while it is still in the early stages of discussion, this would be a good time for any members within a reasonable drive from Colchester to join us. New members are always welcome, so why not give us a try? We meet on the last Thursday of each month and you will be made very welcome.
