Road Models has been designing and manufacturing 4mm etched kits since
1988, when John Redrup produced some etched L&NWR 50’ non
corridor carriages for the P4 exhibition layout, London Road. Since
then, LRM has grown to provide one of the largest ranges of kits
available to the 4mm modeller. The emphasis is on the pre-grouping
period up to 1923, although the prototypes for many of the models in
the range lasted into the post-grouping era of the 1930's, with many
examples surviving into BR ownership. Since 1992, a number of other makes of 4mm kits have been absorbed into the London Road Models range. These include:-
The design “philosophy” of the kits in the LRM range therefore varies according to the original designers objectives. Some kits use overlays, others are etched entirely in nickel silver, while the recently designed kits are more sophisticated. However, LRM have upgraded/updated older kits and instructions where appropriate and have ensured that these models continue to be available to the modeller. Our kits are designed specifically for 4mm. Etched components are in nickel silver for loco and tender chassis. Superstructures are in brass or n/s, as appropriate. Resin castings are used in several kits for large components that would be difficult to assemble from etched parts. Boiler fittings and smaller castings are usually in lost wax brass. White metal castings are also used where appropriate. Locomotive kits include all the parts required to build the model, with the exception of wheels, motor and gears, to give the option of building to P4, EM or 00 gauge. Couplings and pickups are also excluded, to enable the builder to select the system specific to his requirements. Similarly, carriage, van and wagon kits do not include wheels or couplings. Tender locomotive kits include the tender. Where a choice of tenders is available, the most popular version is normally provided, unless one of the alternatives is specified at time of order. Please note that we cannot supply components from other manufacturers that are not shown on our pricelist. This includes wheels, axles, couplings, etc. In addition we cannot enter into correspondence about the compatibility of other manufacturers products, beyond those specific items mentioned in kit instructions. LATEST INTRODUCTIONS L&NWR Teutonic 2-2-2-0 3 cylinder compound. The Teutonics were the most successful of Webb’s 3 cylinder compounds. Introduced in 1889, the last were withdrawn in 1907. The locomotive etches are entirely in nickel silver and provide the builder with the option of fixed, semi-working and (optimistically) fully working Joy outside valve gear. Some of the cylinder and valve gear components are in nickel silver, while the majority of boiler and detail fittings are lost wax brass casings. The axle bearings have been designed so that the front driving axle and wheels are fitted or removed as an assembly to clear the piston slidebars. The frames incorporate a radial truck for the front carrying axle. The kit is designed for drive to the rear axle only, but experienced modellers will be able to incorporate more sophisticated drive systems for both axles. The existing London Road Models 1800 or 2000 gallon Webb tender is supplied as required (the 2000 gallon tenders were generally coupled to the Teutonics after 1903). See price list for ordering details. L, T&SR No 1 class 4-4-2T. Introduced in 1880 the L, T&SR No 1 class 4-4-2T were the first locomotives actually owned by the London Tilbury & Southend Railway, and the first 4-4-2T locomotives on a British railway. They were supplied by two contractors, Sharp Stewart and Nasmyth Wilson. The class, numbered 1 to 36, spent its entire life on the LT&SR system. The LT&SR was absorbed by the Midland Railway in 1912, which itself became part of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway in 1923. The last example was withdrawn in October 1935. Etched in brass and nickel-silver, the kit can be built to OO, EM or P4 gauge, to represent the locomotives in any condition from original LT&SR to late LMSR. It covers both the Sharp Stewart and Nasmyth Wilson builds, with flush or snap head riveted tanks and bunker, short or extended smokeboxes, and the variety of chimneys, domes, smokebox doors and other fittings carried at various times. It does not provide for the four locomotives equipped with rounded cabs and/or condensing apparatus, nor does it cater for some of the minor ‘one-off’ modifications applied to a few individual locomotives. Designed by Allan Sibley, the kit is accompanied by comprehensive instructions which include prototype notes giving details of variations in external appearance, liveries, and references for further reading. The majority of fittings are lost wax brass castings and turned, sprung buffers are included. Wheels, motor and gears are required to complete the model. See price list for ordering details. L&NWR Oerlikon three unit set. A kit for the Oerlikon set has been under development for a number of years. Unfortunately, we have been unable to get sufficient details of the underframe gear to complete the kits. However, following a number of requests, we can now supply the body etches to special order. Each set of etches contains the parts to produce bodies - with floors - for the three carriages in each set. Roofs, underframe details, bogies, etc. will have to be sourced separately. LNWR Chassis and Accessories The LNWR 6’ 3” sprung bogie as used in the LNWR Jubilee/ Precursor Tank kits and the LNWR Radial Truck from the Precursor Tank/Teutonic kits have been made available as separate items. The radial truck includes “chassis guide plates” to fit standard 6 mm frame cut-outs. See price list for prices. AVAILABILITY It is our policy to process all orders as quickly as is practical, usually the day following receipt of the order. However with such a large and diverse range it is possible for us to be out of stock of an item. Where a kit is out of stock and we are awaiting delivery of etches or brass castings it may take up to six weeks before we can complete an order. We are dependent of a number of component suppliers, so if there is going to be a delay we will acknowledge the order and endeavour to advise the probable length of delay. Cheques are not banked or credit cards charged until goods are despatched. (Kits are underlined in the listings just to indicate a link to further information or a photograph). |

| ORDERING BY POST. Please print your name and address and order details clearly to help us. We can accept payment by cheque, money order, or postal order. They should be crossed and made payable to LONDON ROAD MODELS. Alternatively payment can be by credit card, quoting name, address, card number and expiry date. Please note that we cannot send Phosflux or Solder paste by post. Regrettably we do not have the facility to accept telephone or email orders and payment. Whilst this might seem strange in these days of instant communication and gratification, please remember that London Road Models’ proprietor has a full time occupation, so time spent dealing with telephone and email enquiries inevitably prevents kits getting packed and despatched, materials ordered, etc. POST & PACKING. Post and packing is £1.00 for orders up to £25.00. For orders over £25.00 p&p is free of charge. If goods are damaged in the post please do not return them but write immediately, describing the extent of the damage. We will then be able to decide on the best course of action to resolve the problem. In order to comply with Post Office regulations goods damaged in transit must be notified to us within 21 days of posting. EXPORT ORDERS. London Road Models is not VAT registered, therefore we are unable to deduct VAT for overseas customers. We prefer payment by credit card so that we can charge postage at cost to save you money, otherwise please add 10% to cover post and packing. FAULTY GOODS. All our products are guaranteed against faulty workmanship or materials. Whilst every effort is made to ensure that goods leave us in perfect condition, occasionally a defective part slips through. If you are unhappy with any item please do not hesitate to return it with a note of explanation and we will be happy to either replace it or refund the cost. PRODUCT SPECIFICATION. As part of this policy of improvement, from time to time we will amend the specification and contents of our kits to update them. You may therefore notice slight differences between the published description, or between different batches of kits. PERSONAL CALLERS. We are unable to provide a service for customers to collect orders. |
