THE SCALEFOUR SOCIETY 18.83 LAYOUT CHALLENGE |
'The Hump'
South Yorkshire freight operations. circa 1979-82' by Gareth Bayer
The Hump' is intended to represent a section of a once busy marshalling yard in the middle to late Corporate era of British Rail. Obviously based upon Tinsley Yard, it proved impossible to fit the entire yard area Into the space imposed by the rules of the Scalefour Society 18.83 in 18.83' layout challenge, so only a small section has been modelled. Because of the amount of selective compression and movement of structures etc that has had to be employed, the model isn't close enough to the real location to be called Tinsley, so the layout goes by the name, 'The Hump'.
The most interesting part of most marshalling yards is the
hump itself and this has been modelled along with some locomotive stabling
sidings along the front of the layout These are based on nowhere in particular
and are just to keep things moving when nothing is being shoved over the hump.
Power for the hump shunting movements are two Class 13s,
which were the usual power at Tinsley,
Nos. 13 001 and 13 003. One model is
based upon two Bachmann Class 08s, while the other is a Lima/Bachmann/Impetus
hybrid. Because hidden siding space is so tight, there are no other trains on
the layout just light locomotive movements. Most of the locomotive fleet
consists of models that I have built or I'm building for a planned Woodhead line
layout and Includes Class 20, 31, 37, 40, 45, 47 and 56. Like Tinsley, part of
the
layout will be strung with 1500Vd.c. style catenary. Now I'm just waiting
for a quality Class 76 kit to build to run under It.
The layout will be totally DCC controlled, including the turnouts, based around the Lenz system.
