THE SCALEFOUR SOCIETY 18.83 LAYOUT CHALLENGE |
Hotch Potch by Stephen Barnes
The location of the layout is somewhere between Cranbrook and Tenterden in the Weald of Kent. Several schemes were proposed including a Cranbrook and Tenterden Light Railway. The Rother Valley Railway sponsored this one. The layout assumes that the line was built and run by the Kent and East Sussex Railway. The track plan is based on Biddenden. The SECR provided money to the KESR to build the Tenterden to Headcorn section of its line and the line was built to take mainline locomotives. This fact has also been used in the construction of this line. The period of operation is from the 1940s to closure in 1961. Motive power for a line like this would consist of SECR P Class, Brighton A1X Terrier and Stirling O1 tender locomotives. Coaching stock would be LSWR bogie vehicles during the early part, supplemented by SECR Birdcage Brakes after nationalisation. Most trains would be mixed, with BR adding a brake van to spread the brake load. Some passenger and freight only trains may also run. Typical goods in will include coal, general goods, parcels and machinery. Goods out will include hops, market garden produce, soft fruit, cattle and timber.
