Hurstbourne Tarrant (Bourne Valley. Rly. Co) circa 1910
by Peter Noyce
Now owned and operated by the London and South Western Railway, it forms the terminus of a short line from Hurstbourne Priors Station on the main Waterloo — Exeter line. A connection is also made with the cut-off line to Southampton via Fullerton Junction. The line was built by local landowners, hoping to cash in on an early scheme to link Manchester and Swindon to Southampton. This now having been done by the Midland and South Western Junction Railway, the line has settled into typical branch line operation, enjoying links to both London and Southampton. Some industry is present locally in the form of a chalk quarry and small cement works, and of course a brewery!
