THE SCALEFOUR SOCIETY 18.83 LAYOUT CHALLENGE

Fernhurst Goods Depot by Mark Burgess

Fernhurst Goods Depot is my first serious attempt at a Scalefour layout. I was inspired by the competition to enter and hopefully it will spur me on to actually build it. It is based on an lain Rice plan in his book on urban layouts but slightly modified.

It will (hopefully) be based upon the terminus of a fictitious Southern Railway branch in British Railways days in the middle to late 1950's. Fernhurst is a real place however, being just south of Haslemere from where the branch leaves the mainline. There is (in my imagination) one other station on the branch at Kingsley Green. The station at Fernhurst is on the other side of the road (the A286) the entrance to which can be seen on the road bridge.

Operation on the layout is based on the train engine doing the shunting but modeller's licence might allow a 350hp shunter to be on duty in the yard. Goods traffic is envisioned as being coal for the local merchant and farming supplies. If you care to look for Fernhurst on a map you will see that I have only used the name. I have imagined that Fernhurst is a larger town say the size of Midhurst. Some people, I know do not approve of fictitious layouts but I would reply to that. "Where would we be without imagination"?
