THE SCALEFOUR SOCIETY 18.83 LAYOUT CHALLENGE |
Essex Road & Surrey
Street
Owner: Chris Stapleton
Period: Late 1914—late 1915
Location: London (just west of the City boundary)
Scale: 4mm:lft, Gauge: 18.83mm (P4)
Essex Road is a small Great Eastern Railway suburban
terminus whilst Surrey Street is the adjoining, although lower, Metropolitan
District Railway station, situated just outside the City of London's western
boundary (very close to the current District/Circle line Temple station).
Because most of the track between Essex Road station and the main line is in
tunnels, working is restricted to those steam locomotives fitted with condensing
apparatus. Surrey Street on the other hand is home to the clean and efficient
Metropolitan District Railway electric stock.
Operation is mainly concentrated on Essex road, operating a timetable similar to
a weekday service, whilst the operation through Surrey Street is run more as a
shuttle service but with occasional trains of London Tilbury and Southend stock
hauled by a couple of the MDR's electric locomotives.
