THE SCALEFOUR SOCIETY 18.83 LAYOUT CHALLENGE |
CAMELEY
The Model
The model is constructed on one main base baseboard, with an attached fiddle
yard. The lighting/scenic! display unit is an integral part of the design, and
is transported as a single unit. The construction of the boards is in 9mm ply
wood. The track work is to P4 standards, designed using Templot (which doesn't
have Y points, hence the overlay of two standard turnouts as above). The layout
is controlled by DCC.
The main scenic board is 7' 10" long X 1' 10" wide (7.83 x
1.83) = 14.33 sq ft.
The fiddle yard is 3' long X 1' 6" wide (3 x 1.5 ) = 4.5 sq ft.
The total being exactly 18.83 sq ft.
The Inspiration
The inspiration for the model comes from Lydbrook in the Forest of Dean,
where there was a station, an ironworks, the scenically important loading bank
served by a narrow gauge railway, all between two tunnels, and in less space
than I have used.
I have transported the site across the River Severn to the Cam Valley, well
known for the Camerton Branch, however, upon leaving Hallatrow Station we head
up the valley to eventually join up with the Wrington Vale Light Railway. The
branch provides rail access to a number of existing small quarries and coal
mines, plus the rich agricultural produce of the valley.
The model is based in the steam-diesel transition era, and uses mostly stock
that was seen using the Bristol and North Somerset, and Cheddar Valley lines,
although a few visitors from the Forest of Dean may be seen.
