flat bottomed track

Postby Hardwicke » Wed Jan 10, 2024 2:04 pm

I know there are Peco IL-112 Pandrol Rail Fixings available and there used to be some spiked fixings available but what can I get now?

I've also noticed the Proto87 site has dropped off our list of suppliers. Their base plates, nice as they are aren't what I need. After 60+ years since the widespread introduction of FB track it's a shame so little is available in the scale modelling.

I think Ambis make some base plates but can you use them with P4Track Co sleeper bases?

It is a shame no-one picked up Colin Craig's range from him.

Around 20 years ago Bill Bedford made a trial etch for me - sufficient for a 60ft panel - of the same BR1 baseplate with 3 spikes that Tony Wilkins describes in his Brimsdown thread, using the Colin Craig version viewtopic.php?t=5707&start=450
I made the track, photographed it, and sent it to Tim Shackleton who was I think editor of the MRJ at the time. As far as I recall he was going to feature it but I don't think that ever happened; I didn't get the track back and have lost the photos. My plans changed and I didn't pursue the project (00 gauge Skipton 1990). But it is a shame this type of track that was so commonplace is so hard to represent. Maybe if there was sufficient interest Bill might have the drawings still.

Regrettably progress towards that end appears to have stalled. :(

Having made up that much for my layout Brimsdown, I can assure you making that much is incredibly mind numbing, even though the result is worthwhile. I really hope the range will become available again.

I did about that much of Colin's Mills clip flat bottom track for Brettell Road - I wouldn't be rushing to do it again! :D

I agree on both points. On Elcot Road FB rail with pandrol clips was used on the main line and the run round loop and BR2 fixings in the bay platform road - about four feet of it. It took about 2 hours to do an 18 inch length of track. It should have been BR3 fixings in the bay but at the time we did not realise these were available from Masokits. :(

The location I'm researching seems to have pandrol fittings in photos of 1965 but I remember BR1 baseplates in the 70's on one line (Up) only. Oddly the points were possibly bullhead from a hazy memory and photos though they might just be FB. Research is sometimes more interesting than building the models.

The pandrols are about half a mile west of the location on the flying junction.

Yes, it was my mistake. I've seen that but they are for the rather rare Southern Region third rail version. The Proto87 stuff is similar to what I want but has 4 holes instead of 3, is 3.5mm scale so about 0.5 mm to short (!) and I've got to get it from USA with their crippling custom taxes....
