At this months meeting Bob Ellis provided a talk for us on 'Railway Research', which had already presented to the EM Gauge Society at EXPO EM, and I belive will also be the subject of a Scalefour Digest article.
Bob a historian by profession and using those techniques, took us through may of facets of reseach, including various sources and evidence and how to cross reference them, then explained some of the common mistakes like insufficent research, misinterpretation, failures to cross reference. He then walked us through how to apply this information to your model, even might have beens, how to establish what and when to model it, for example what traffic would be flowing, did market days bring in special traffice, where there special excursions for race traffic and then assertain if the final model would satisfy your operating potential or needs.
Finally we added a moral to the story - 'Stop Resarch once you've built it !' (It will avoid disapointment when that elusive bit of information surfaces and you had just finished that coach, wagon, building etc.)
Thank you Bob for a very enjoyable and interesting presentation.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday November 19th - which is a run and natter - please remember to bring your £4 for the hotpot on December 10th - pre-payment is required.
