Been (over a fairly long period) working on some 1980's vehicles for my layout. There, aside from buses being a big gap in models available ready to plonk!

A couple of the old Corgi Lorries are to 4mm scale. The first being the Ford Cargo


Ford Cargo with Base toys chassis and a scratchbuilt box body and tail lift. The pic below shows a before and after.


On the left the Corgi MAN lorry with base toys chassis, widened and detailed flat bed and a Hi-ab crane from Herpa.


Paint (with a knightwing Volvo thrown in)


Some variations on a transit theme. Original trackside model on the right , the bare bones of a LWB version in the middle (to be a White Arrow Mk 2) and a SWB luton version on the left.

Inspired by Peters thread over on RMweb here I have picked up (for a massive 20p!) a Corgi Mercedes Minibus. Research shows its pretty accurate for 4mm scale and was in production from the late 60's right up until 1986! It also came in many versions so an ideal candidate for a typical large white van!

Basically (so far) I have cut out the window frames and filled in the side and back windows along with the slot at the back that holds the chassis in place. These infills will need filler and sanding smooth before door lines are scribed on. The wheels have been swapped for Paragon models ones as per my earlier Transit conversions.

Been a while since I posted anything to this thread. The Mercedes van shown above has been finished for a while now so here's a piccie ofg it posing alongside another one thats straight from the toybox.



I have been hacking up more Corgi lorries too.



I need to order a Dodge cab from RTI for the one on theft. The Jewson transfers on the other one are home brewed.



A couple more in progress ones. More DIY transfers.

JIm, That's a nice looking model. The reason I asked was because I didn't see at first any wing mirrors. Pleased they are there. Its THE feature that is usually left off all road vehicles. No wing mirrors fitted to the road vehicles on CR, he said in embarrassement. Good on you, Jim.

A while ago there was a discussion (over on RMweb) about the Dodge Commer and mention made that the EFSI one is 4mm scale. So, suitably inspired I tracked one down and have produced this!



Along with the obligatory wheel swap I filed off the read wheel arches and repositioned them lower down. I also changed the radiator and bonnet to represent a Diesel engined version. I wanted to try out an idea I had to reproduce the effect you get when old lettering is removed after a long time. So I printed out a logo in a very slightly darker red on transfer paper and then applied it to the model AFTER i had weathered it. Quite pleased with the result!

A few more for your perusal!



Left to right - ABC volvo Ailsa - top and bottom half glued together, filled and sanded smooth - I repainted the middle and re-branded it to WMT livery. Weathered and then the windows were masked before a quick coat of matt varnish. Although the ABC model includes rear view mirrors I substituted them with my own etched ones.

Leyland Constructor in ARC colours. Base toys cab on a modified Knightwing tippler chassis

Dodge commer from EFSI. I filed off the rear wheel arches and redid them lover down. I also modified the radiator and bonnet to represent a diesel engined version. The transfers on all 3 were DIY.

I need lots of these but alas nothing is available off the shelf so...

A couple of likely candidates off the shelf. Atlanteans from Britbus (left) and EFE. I decided the Britbus effort was closer.



The britbus one stripped down along side a resin kit for the actual fleetline. For the money the resin kit is poor so I plan to stick with the die cast ones for the layout. I will finish the resin one anyway now that I have it.

Since I need a lot it made sense to draw up an etch for the parts I need to convert the model. Of course I can use these parts to improve the resin bus too.

The fleetlines have emerged from the paintshop. Still preferring the ex britbus.

Also OMWB is a Mk1 transit bus from John Day Models. A simple enough kit - just 3 parts but lets just say its a bit erm... 'scruffy'

HI All

I am currently working on a rescue vehicle based on the good old Corgi Ford Cargo

progress on the bulkhead for the back. Simply 60thou square microstrip and a bit of 20 thou for the plate.



This is how it looks in temporary position (the wheels are too big at the moment)



The winch is just a piece of microstrip, a piece of tube and a couple of washers. More 60thou represents the motor and wrap cotton round for the cable. The guide again is from microstrip, the main housing being U section cut to shape. The lights are simply a couple of 2mm bearings.

The model looks excellent Jim, just a couple of comments though, those ramps look a tad on the long side or the beaver tail angle is wrong, when the ramps are down the angle should match or at least be really close to the beavertail angle of the body, also the long vehicle signs on the ramps are incorrect, they are only required on articulated vehicles, you should change to just the striped version only to be correct, then again you don't even have to have them on 7.5t trucks. The one that I used to drive also had a straps box located behind the rear wheels.

I remember recovering a burnt out car for the insurance company from the Rover plant at oxford, it was so glued to the ground in its own burnt plastics, that it snapped the shackle between the hook and the cable, cable whiplashed and removed the Cargo's rear cab windows in loads of little bits, I still got the car recovered though.... happy days they were

The chaps on the model truck forum thought I would need them. The 1986 highway code isnt much help as it groups the long vehicle and chevrons all together saying :-

"motor vehicles over 7500 KG gross weight and trailers over 3500 Kg maximum gross weight. The vertical markings are also required to be fitted to builders skips placed in the road. Commercial vehicle or combination longer than 13 metres (optional on combinations between 11 and 13 metres"

I'll swap them for the chevrons I think. Again they seem to be all manner of shapes and sizes. Its pretty hard finding pictures of anything in the 80's (thats not a bus!) let lone its backside! I found my prototype for this one lurking around the back of the Birmingham Bus museum.



While I always do my models for my own enjoyment I love it when something I have done sparks a little story or memory like the one you mentioned here, Thanks for sharing it.
