Masokits sprung underframe

Masokits sprung underframe

Postby nberrington » Thu Dec 29, 2011 11:57 pm

I recently bought a couple of Masokits underframes on an auction site.
I am scratching my noggin, as I have no idea how the springing works.
Can someone point me at the idiots guide please?

There are quite a few varieties, earlier ones have etched steel springs, newer ones wire springs, check the catalogue to see which you have and I can probably supply some instructions.

Definitely need to know what they are as Keith says.

If its the earlier style someone may have removed the stainless steel bearing carrier etch which is why you'd have issues.

Hi Keith and Craig

Thanks for the response - it is the 9' single sided Morton/ RCH underframe, with guitar wire springs.
They don't seem to work like Bill's or yours Craig - not sure where the wire goes.
There are instructions, but showing the brake variations, not how the springs work. I was wondering if they were a bit like the exactoscale version??

I think you had to solder the wire to a 90 deg bend in the bottom of the spring carrier and rather than fitting in holes there were tabs the wire rests on and fold over retainers. There are also guides on the back of the retainers.

I have a 10ft van chassis compare somewhere on rmweb.. edit: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index. ... _p__180631 in fact but unfortunately no shot of the springing. I can try taking one when im back in Manchester after new years though if you're still stuck as its now had the wheels removed and been put in the junk box. The system works though and i've kept my Southern CCTs fitted with the Masokits underframe.

Attached pdf is the first half of the instructions for Mike's subframes with wire springs, with luck they are the right ones ;)
(The second half is all about brake gear).
