Red Oxide Colour

Red Oxide Colour

Postby pheald » Sun Jul 24, 2011 9:22 pm

I am building a number of pre British Rail private owner wagons which are reported to be a "red oxide" colour. I am not sure what colour red oxide really is, I am guess I am not alone. What paint is used as a red oxide. I have access to the usual Revell and Humbrol ranges from local model shops and off course could use mail order. Any thoughts anyone?

This has been discussed before on many occasions, but I have seen a recent RMweb thread on this subject.
Somewhere there is a definitive reply, but I can't remember where, it could be in Peter Matthews series in the old MRN.

Hello Peter,

Replying to this thread and joining in rather late.

I think that POW Sides paint their "Red Oxide" wagons with Humbrol No 100. To me this looks a bit too "orange" and a rather unlikely colour for a railway wagon in steam days.

The private owner wagons which I made for "Cheadle" quite a few years ago now, such as Berryhill Collieries, were painted with Precision Red Oxide (as I recall) this to me looks a rather more likely colour for a working wagon.

As an alternative, how about Humbrol Numbers 70 or 113 ?

This thought is based on a subjective opinion, rather than any hard evidence.
