Outside cranks for 08 shunter
Is anyone aware of a source for outside cranks for an 08 apart from the usual Gibson ones? My old ones are getting a bit weary and prone to slipping/splitting so I thought it best to see if others existed before going back to the originals. To be fair the Gibson ones were mostly pushing 20 years old.
Cheers,
David

Justin Newitt at Rumney Models did some for me as a commission a few years ago in the form of a multi layer etch. I assume that he still has the artwork?

Before anyone asks, I don't really use the right sort of material to do printed cranks.

What about the Hornby ones?
Ordsall Road (BR(E)), Forge Mill Sidings (BR(M)), Kirkcliffe Coking Plant (BR(E)), Swanage (BR (S)) and Heaby (LMS/MR). Acquired Thorneywood (GNR). Still trying to "Keep the Balance".

All my 08s are Bachmann. Are the Hornby cranks available as spares and will they fit 1/8” or 3mm axles?

Is an etch a practical solution or would you need a certain volume of orders to justify the expense?

They are 1/8 I think as I used standard Gibson wheels

Only as part of a complete axle set. Hornby 08's use 3mm axles & bearings. Bearing design has changed down the years since the upgraded Hornby 08 was introduced. At first they used a square sintered brass bearing which later changed to a round bearing. Hornby cranks are a push fit onto a square extension cast integral with the wheel.
Pic probably explains it better. Apologies for the phot quality. A mobby phone pic of Hornby 08 wheelsets Currently sitting on my worktop.

Re: Outside cranks for 08 shunter
08 cranks are, I believe, a particular shape which only the Gibson or Ultrascale replicate. Actually, Ultrascale only make the 08 shape. I believe they do a 3mm axle version as I have a Bachmann 08 fitted with their wheels and cranks.
A brass alternative could be fashioned from multiple layers of Brassmasters etches opened up to 3mm. I have done this on a converted Bachmann Dukedog and City. The 08 shape would be a simple filing job.

Artwork for an etch exists as it was done for a commission a few years ago. There is no production tooling though and it would need around 30 sets to make it viable to produce one.

Thanks for that Justin. I would need three sets so it would all depend on whether there were others in the same boat as me. In the short term I’ll fall back on the Gibson product but if there’s a sudden rush of interest in the etched version I hope Justin will let us know.
Thanks to all the others who contributed.

I have an 08 that needs replavement cranks and would be hppy to take three sets in total to give some spares.

That's a shame as the square bearings were great.
