There are those from York modelmaking but I have been pleased with a pair I bought here about a year ago:

I have not tried them out on brass soldering - I would be fearful of the heat damaging the strength of the magnets - but whitemetal probably would be fine.

All the best

I don't remember a problem with brass personally.

The edges were chamfered to give a clean surface on which to bond. I used Mek Pak.

The body fitted back together squarely and easily.
The floor now sits level which wasn't the case when I bought this second hand wagon.

Ah that's useful, thanks. I had seen warnings that trying to solder in close proximity to magnets was likely to reduce their magnetism, so I had been avoiding using the clamps with brass. I will give them a cautious try at some point (and if they do fade a bit, well they are pretty powerful just now so will probably still be quite effective, and if not, well they're not the most expensive tools on my workbench if they did need replacing).

All the best

Neil

They're quite powerful and if you melt them or the magnetism lessens then I'm sure York would be happy to sell you some more.

The wagon floor did need filing a shade on all four sides and the end needed cleaning up again. Just enough to let the floor drop in snugly. It needed a slight push, that's all. It will be interesting to see how much easier it is to assemble from one of the unbuilt kits I have.

The Midland coke wagon had it's interior painted recently and the body reassembled.

Slater's Private Owners. Planking scribed, painted and bodies reassembled. All were fairly non square second hand purchases. Solebars, suspension and fittings next.

LMS non ventilated van was taken apart over 10 years ago for poor, non compensated/sprung running and it wasn't square. An early build by myself. It was painted and partly lettered though. I've fitted sprung suspension and my own brackets to fit to the inside. This week it finally got reassembled with low melt solder.
