Layout plan

Kirkcliffe Coking Plant by Michael Prince

Kirkcliffe Coking Plant is based on the similar Smithywood Coking plant near Chapeltown, Sheffield, South Yorkshire.  Built by Newton Chambers in the 1920¹s it used coal from local collieries, finally closing in the 1980¹s and since redeveloped.

The layout is set between 1962 - 1985 so that Falcon and class 58s can be included - but not at the same time.  Known locomotives on the line were class 08s and class 47s, though class 20s and 31s would have also appeared.  The industrials include Austerity tanks, EE 0-4-0 diesels and Sentinels, but an 04 and a Hawthorn Leslie will also appear. The boards are similar versions used on my previous layout using ply and block beams with sealed balsa tops. Track is P4 Track Company with Tortoise point motors.  Buildings are Slaters Plastikard sandwiched together (on a large scale).  Most of the trackbeds are covered in a mixture of real locomotive smokebox ash, aquarium silica and plaster. Grass is plumber’s insulation, dyed green
